1951 – 2013
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Marla J. Foxgord. Marla was born at Glendale Memorial Hospital to Joe and Dorothy Johnson on April 13, 1951.
Favorite childhood memories include being in the Brownies and dancing at Disneyland parades with her elementary school dance troop. At that point in life, Marla grew to love anything Disney – a passion that remained with her for the rest of her life. Marla was present with Walt Disney when the Wishing Well was dedicated. Walt handed Marla one of the first coins to make one of the first wishes.
Later in life, Marla attended Glendale High School and eventually Glendale High Cosmetology School. While working as a crossing guard for the California Highway Patrol in the city of La Cañada, Marla met the love of her life Craig Foxgord in 1973. In 1979, they were married in Carson City, Nev.
The year 1973 marked another significant event in the history of Montrose – the opening of Montrose Hobby. Marla, Craig and Craig’s father Maury ran the iconic store that catered to RC model enthusiasts for 24 years. A good number of residents grew up going to the store that offered an unparalleled family feel.
Marla and Craig toured around the country with their Lance camper competing in AMA sailplane contests and bred new fliers through the hobby shop by the dozen.
When not in the shop, Marla ran a day care business. The kids she raised (now mostly adults) still refer to her as their beloved “Auntie.” Although not able to have children of her own, Marla was always surrounded by children.
Among Marla’s favorite things were Christmas, RV’ing, camping in the High
Sierras, Berger’s Restaurant in Mammoth, fishing, animals, Neil Diamond, ABBA, Barry Manilow, Pepsi Cola and her friends.
Marla will be remembered for her kind nature, her strength, her words of wisdom, her unending love for those closest to her, a beautiful smile and a contagious laugh. As a couple, Marla and Craig demonstrated the true meaning of companionship, dedication and love. Marla left us at the peak of her game … rich with close friends and cherished memories. We will miss you Marla, but your unending love will be with us forever.
There will be a memorial service for Marla at La Crescenta Presbyterian Church, 2902 Montrose Ave. in La Crescenta. Date and time to be determined.
