On Sept. 30, the Lady of Lourdes varsity flag football team won its CYO West Foothill Division league opener at Holy Trinity by a score of 30 to 6.
Teddy Ibarra led the way for the Lions with three rushing touchdowns on the first three Lion drives before leaving the game with a leg injury. Andrew Petrosian picked up the scoring, catching a 30-yard touchdown pass from QB Hayden Byrnes early in the third quarter. Key blocks were provided by Clayton Esparza.
Luke Hunter and Clayton Byer provided plenty of time for the QB to throw downfield and never allowed a sack. Michael Alarcon stood out on defense with two interceptions while Sean Burns put pressure on the Trinity QB that included a pass breakup on fourth down giving the ball back to the Lions.
Holy Trinity’s lone score came in the second quarter on a kick return when the ball carrier appeared to be out of bounds; however, it was ruled in bounds. Defensive coordinator Sean Byrnes was pleased with the Lions’ performance, particularly that the team only gave up one score on the kick return and just a single first down.
Head Coach Todd Byer said that he was impressed with how the second team offense moved the ball when the starters were pulled early in the third.
