May 9, 1924 – Dec. 4, 2013

William John Scully passed away at home on Dec. 4, with his loving wife Helen at his side.

“Bill” was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. Born on May 9, 1924 to William and Helen Scully, he and his sister Catherine (Scully) Jolliffe were raised in Glendale.

Bill attended Glendale schools and after graduating from Hoover, he entered the Navy in April 1943 and proudly served in the Pacific theatre aboard the USS Makin Island, honorably discharged in 1946.

After the war, he returned to Glendale College, graduated and then proudly continued his education graduating from UCLA in 1952 with a degree in psychology.

Bill worked for L.A. County in the Probation Dept. and the California Youth Authority working at many different locations and camps. Always a strong advocate for young people, Bill remarked that he never met a bad kid, only kids that had come from bad circumstances.

He married Helen L. Holcomb on Aug. 6, 1950 and moved to La Crescenta in 1955 where they raised four children – Bill Scully III (Diane), Dan Scully, Nancy (Brad) Berger and Tim Scully. In addition, he has eight grandchildren: Jill Woodman (Nick), Jeremiah (Courtney), Bethany and Gabriel Scully, Jessica Kozol (Devlyn), and Mark, Nick and Brooke Berger; nine great grandchildren: Hugo and Duke Woodman, Chase, Charley, Trent and Liza Kozol, Sawyer, Mia and Ava Scully; and three foster daughters, Lorna, Glynis and Carin Moore.

Bill was an outstanding dad who sacrificed much to raise his children in a loving environment where they were free to be kids. No hobby was ignored and included planes, motorcycles, horses and more.

Bill was a kind friend, sharp of mind and generous with his time. He was there for everyone. He will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

A celebration of life will be on Dec 27 at the Church of the Ascension at 25 E. Laurel, Sierra Madre at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted at the Convalescent Aid Society, 3255 E. Foothill Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107.
