This year’s mock trial season has come to an end for Crescenta Valley High School. The team made it to the quarter-finals this year, something they consider a great victory.

“We had some really good competitions we can look back on and know we gave it our all,” club president Courtney Sohn said.

CVHS’s mock trial team consists of a defense team and a prosecution team. The two sub-teams take turns battling the opposing teams of different schools at the Los Angeles courthouse.

The defense team competed first, led by the club’s vice president Taylor Middleton. The goal of the defense was to prove its defendant, Rae Concha, innocent. CVHS’s mock trial attorneys were able to do this with much ease in two rounds.

Although the verdict of the trial does not affect the scoring of each school, CVHS came out on top in these rounds. The prosecution team led by Sohn competed with just as much strength and passion. They worked to convict the defendant of possession of Adderall with the intent to sell as well as a charge of second-degree murder of a peer.

Every participant strove to play his or her part perfectly, whether as an attorney, witness or bailiff.

The team as a whole made it through the preliminary rounds and the “Sweet 16” round before they were defeated in quarter-finals.

While members are grateful for the experience, the team is mostly thankful for the time they spent getting to know each other and learning new things. They often describe themselves as “a family.” The team is taking the next few months to celebrate all they have achieved before auditioning and accepting members for the 2014 mock trial season.
