Located to the south of the dog park at Crescenta Valley Park is a modest recreation center. On most days, the rec center is the location of an after-school program for kids where they hang out until their parents are able to pick them up. On Saturday, though, the rec center became a spot for Santa Claus to hang out.
On the chilly morning of Dec. 21, the volunteers who help out with the after-school program gathered together to host Breakfast with Santa at the rec center. Children lined up outside just before 10 a.m. in anticipation of seeing the big man. Once the doors opened, three elves came out. The children were so excited because the elves were none other than the volunteers who they’ve come to know!
One volunteer came out to welcome guests and explain how the morning would unfold. The children could take part in a coloring contest, there would be a raffle for the parents, and every child would get a gift from Santa.
After making their way inside, guests sat down while volunteers made sure everyone had what they needed. They even gave each child a little hacky-sack to play with. Two middle school volunteers helped distribute food and said that they were glad to see all the families come together and the smiles on everyone’s faces.
After each child had the chance to tell Santa what they hoped to find under the tree, the morning’s festivities were over.
The food was donated by Trader Joe’s and Starbucks. The presents were donated by community members. The Breakfast with Santa event was sponsored by the County of Los Angeles.
