As you look across to page 3, you’ll see that we have prepared our annual year in review. This is one of my favorite issues because it gives Crescenta Valley Weekly readers (including me) a snapshot of some of the major events that occurred over the past 365 days. These include somber moments and funny times; historic events and traditional observances.

The year in review is presented as close as possible to the beginning of the new year and, if you’re inclined to make resolutions, may act as a springboard for your year in review. After all, how else are you going to know what resolutions to make if you don’t take the time to review the year to see what changes you want to undertake?

One of the first things you might consider is what you want to bring into 2014. And, maybe more importantly, what do you not want to drag into the new year?

Researchers have found that, for whatever reason, we remember bad things more often than good. A rude comment or a hurtful remark are easily brought to mind whereas a kind word seems easily discarded from our memory.

But no doubt your year has included moments you want to remember – maybe a marriage, new baby, graduation, a trip or promotion. Perhaps something less life changing like a well earned, long waited for compliment. We always think we’ll remember how we felt at these moments, but unfortunately those positive feelings often fade away. Consider starting a “joy journal” to capture those positive feelings. You can pull it out and revisit those encouraging memories that will be especially uplifting when you are feeling down.

In looking ahead, I also challenge you to examine how you deal with people. Are you the one who casts disparaging remarks? When giving direction, are you critical or genuinely eager to improve someone’s performance? Do you treat others the way you want to be treated?

We are all in this together and we don’t really know where anyone else is in their journey. As we move forward into 2014 together, hopefully we’ll provide entries into each other’s joy journal.
