Boys’ Basketball

Jan. 22: Every player scored as the Rebels played stifling defense and made nine 3-point baskets to secure the win over Kilpatrick, 70-24. Scott Tsangeos had a game

high 16 points, and brother Andrew Tsangeos added 13.

Jan. 24: A double overtime thriller, a 61-60 win over Chadwick as Andrew Tsangeos made the game-winning 3-point basket as time expired. It was his fifth 3-pointer, contributing to a career high 30-point performance. Robert Cartwright added 15, and Kyle Hamane played tremendous defense. The Rebels now have a 3-0 league record.

Prep was 7-11, 3-0 in the Prep League heading into Tuesday’s game vs. Pasadena Poly. They play today at Rio Hondo Prep at 7:30 p.m.

Girls’ Basketball

Jan. 23: The Prep varsity girls increased their record to 10-2, 3-0 in league with a win against Westridge by the score of 50-42. The Rebels were affected by the overall size of Westridge early in the game, and found themselves trailing at the half by one. After a defensive adjustment and increasing their tempo, the Rebels were able to go on a 12-0 run in the third quarter to take an 8-point lead into the final quarter. The leading scorers for Prep were Tala Ismail with 15 points and Maya Okamoto with 12.

Jan. 24: Prep defeated Chadwick, 57-25. The Rebels got in early foul trouble while being a little over aggressive on defense, but led in the first quarter 14-6. The lead stretched to double digits by halftime. Tala Ismail had a monster game with 19 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Freshman Renae Tamura took over the lead role in the second half scoring seven of her 11 points in that half.

Jan. 28: The Prep varsity girls went into Poly looking to add to their historical win over the Panthers at home, but fell short by the score of 55-52. The Rebels started out the game pretty well behind Lacy Coan’s six points and Maya Okamoto’s five points in the first quarter. Prep trailed by 12 points going into the final period and made the decision to apply full court pressure, turning the game around and cutting the lead to just a single possession, capped by Taylor Yoshida’s six points in the final quarter, but the clock ran out on the Rebels.

The Lady Rebels are 11-3, 4-1 in league. They play today at Rio Hondo Prep at 4:40 p.m.

Boys’ Soccer

Jan. 23: With less than 24 hours rest, the Rebels hosted Milken Community School. The squad mustered up all the energy and effort they could to defeat the visitors 2-0. Tim Bates assisted on both goals, one scored by Ari Baranian and the other by Henry Griffith. Hamilton Evans posted his ninth shutout of the year as the team improved to 10 wins, three losses, and two ties.

Jan. 28: The Rebel soccer team took on a defensive minded Rio Hondo squad and won 2-0 Tuesday afternoon at the Glendale Sports Complex. With the opponent content to sit back and defend, the Rebels were able to possess the ball nicely. Early in the second half, John Trienan received a pass from Henry Griffith and found the back of the net. Not too long afterwards, Riley Jones scored off a shot from the top of the box. Hamilton Evans picked up his ninth shutout of the year.

The Rebels now stand 11-3-2 overall and 3-0-2 in league. They play Friday at Pasadena Poly at 3:30 p.m.
