As part of the Glendale Unified School District’s emphasis on curbing bullying within its schools, the district is partnering with CV Alliance (formerly the Crescenta Valley Drug and Alcohol Prevention Coalition) to hold an anti-bullying event on Feb. 13 at the Crescenta Valley High School library.

Dr. Scott Anderle, GUSD’s assistant director of Student Support Services, will host the event. Anderle will speak about the Olweus bullying prevention program, which GUSD hopes to implement at schools throughout the district.

Developed by Dr. Dan Olweus, the program seeks to reduce bullying in schools by providing strategies for both students and teachers, as well as individual interventions for students identified as targets of bullying and students who have bullied others. The program also establishes a Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee, increased staff training on anti-bullying techniques and increased involvement with parents and other members of the community.

Currently, Olweus is being fully implemented at four GUSD schools: Fremont Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, R.D White Elementary and Rosemont Middle School. It will be implemented soon at Crescenta Valley High School, Valley View Elementary, Mountain Avenue Elementary, Monte Vista Elementary and Toll Middle School.

The Feb. 13 event will also focus on substance abuse and how it relates to bullying. Suzy Jacobs of CV Alliance said that the topic of substance abuse is often raised in relation to bullying because of increased substance abuse among those who are bullied.

“We want to talk about ways in which we can mitigate that,” said Jacobs.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. and end at 8:30 p.m.
