The History of JPL subject of next meeting
The Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley will be presenting a history of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory at its next meeting.
JPL’s roots go back to the ‘30s when a group of Caltech students, dubbed the Suicide Squad, were using the vacant land of the Arroyo Seco next to La Cañada to experiment with rockets. It also has led the world in the exploration of the solar system including the Spirit and Opportunity rovers.
At the meeting Erik Conway, historian at Jet Propulsion Laboratory will present the history of one of the world’s preeminent centers for space exploration.
The public is invited on Monday, Feb. 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Center For Spiritual Living (formerly known as the La Crescenta Church of Religious Science) located on the corner of  Dunsmore and Santa Carlotta.

OFFICIALS URGE SIGN UP FOR EMERGENCY ALERTS
Los Angeles County officials urged residents and businesses to sign up for emergency alerts by registering their cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses on the Alert.lacounty.gov website.
The County’s emergency mass notification system, called Alert LA County, has the capability to use phone, text and e-mail messages to alert residents and businesses when there is an emergency situation in their area and advises of needed actions, like evacuations.
All landlines are already included in the system, but people must register their cell phone numbers, Voice over IP phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. This information can be added on the alert.lacounty.gov website.

CLEAN UP VOLUNTEERS NEED TO REGISTER WITH CITY
To help coordinate clean up efforts, the city of La Cañada has decided to coordinate all volunteers through a clearing house. Anyone interested or who knows of a group who is interested in helping out should e-mail Nick Berkuta at mudslidevolunteers@lcf.ca.gov.

WINTER
WONDERLAND COMING
The City of Glendale Community Services & Parks Department is sponsoring the annual Winter Wonderland event at Brand Park, 1601 W. Mountain St., on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Over 60 tons of manufactured snow will transform the west side of the park into a winter carnival setting.  Children are invited to play in active and passive snow areas, and participate in various snow themed activities. Plastic snow discs will be provided for the downhill slides. Display booths and refreshments will be available. Admission to the event is free; however, there will be nominal charges for some of the day’s activities. An adult must accompany all children. In case of rain, the event will be cancelled.
