Goodbye to a CVW Friend

I’ve shared with you over the last four and a half years some of the challenges and successes I’ve had since launching the Crescenta Valley Weekly in 2009. The decision to bring a newspaper to the foothills after the Los Angeles Times, which owns the Glendale NewsPress, La Cañada Valley Sun and the Burbank Leader, closed the Crescenta Valley Sun where I was editor was a scary one to say the least. After all, there’s no deep pockets financially backing this venture; it was my husband Steve and I who decided to take this leap of faith. I was fortunate in that the community rallied around my decision and, to this day, continues to support the Crescenta Valley Weekly.

In addition to the support of the immediate community, I was fortunate in receiving encouragement from government officials including the Office of the State Assembly 43rd District. Among these was Suzanne Dunwell, senior field rep for Assemblyman Mike Gatto.

I met Suzanne early in my days as publisher of CV Weekly. She was at just about every public function, presenting awardees with certificates honoring them on behalf of Assemblyman Gatto. She was always welcoming and made me feel important. She made sure to seek me out and ask me how my family was doing.

Well, after years of service to the state (and on her birthday no less), Suzanne retired. The goodbye party was held at Casa Cordoba on Honolulu Avenue in Montrose on Friday. I was honored to be invited to wish her well and to thank her for the kindness – and respect – she always showed me.

And after conferring all those certificates over the years, Suzanne received her very own certificate … of appreciation from her boss.
