While other students celebrated the beginning of spring break by visiting amusement parks or traveling out of town, a group of high school students dedicated their Friday evenings to teaching math to younger students.

Every week, Global Leadership Institute Math Club (GLIM) provides a free math tutoring program for students who cannot afford the demanding prices of after school classes. Tutees are paired with a tutor on a one-on-one buddy basis and are taught not only school math but also competitive math. Tutors also give general advice on topics such as how to manage time during tests and how to effectively plan out class schedules for the next year.

“The amount of dedication both the students and the student teachers put forth in being taught and teaching is impressive and praiseworthy,” said James Park, student president of GLIM.

Global Leadership Institute (GLI), an organization that works to promote the development and education of children, opened the math tutoring program in La Crescenta in April 2012. Since then, the GUSD branch of GLIM has been gaining popularity. The first GLI math tutoring program opened in Rancho Cucamonga in 2007 with the intention of giving youths both a chance to volunteer in their local communities and the opportunity to receive qualified education regardless of financial status.

The club has branched out to 20 different school districts, with the goal of expanding to all of America’s school districts in order to supply both equal education and service opportunities to all.

The La Crescenta division’s GLIM program takes place every Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at New Song Church (4413 La Crescenta Ave.). Church attendance is not mandatory. The club is currently welcoming new students and tutors of all ages from grades one through 12.
