Dozens of folks turned out for the annual Day at the Races at Santa Anita benefiting the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Support Group and the Montrose and Crescenta Valley chambers of commerce on May 16. Attendees paid $25 for the chance to wager on nine Thoroughbred races, dine on a barbecue lunch and bid on silent auction items.
Horses at the gate for the 1 p.m. post time for the first race were met with temperatures as warm as the crowd. Throughout the nine races, organizer Rick Dinger was on hand to offer his “expert” handicapping. Attendees enjoyed fare provided by Schreiner’s Fine Sausages and the Pieroni family donated all of the beverages. Dinger said the event raised over $3,000, which goes to the CV Sheriff’s Support Group’s general fund.
“The support group counts on fundraisers like the Day at the Races to help continue to provide our local station with the state of the art tools, equipment and vehicles for law enforcement and our world class search and rescue volunteers,” he said.
Donations are always welcome and can be mailed to Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce; 3131 Foothill Blvd. Ste. D, La Crescenta 91214.
