A “Political Pizza Party” is being held Thursday evening, April 24 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the La Cañada Thursday Club by the Republican Club of the Foothills.
The Primary Election ballot will be coming in the mail. Be prepared. Voters will be asked to select at least 12 candidates from a list of over 75 to fill a variety of federal, state and local offices.

PLANT SALE AT ARBORETUM
The Foothill Chapter of the California Turtle and Tortoise Club is having its annual plant auction fundraiser on Friday, April 25. Plants are donated by the horticulture program at Sylmar High School and members also donate plants that they have grown or bought for this occasion.
The auction will be held in the Bamboo Room at the L.A. Arboretum in Arcadia at 7:30 p.m. Apart from the plants that are for sale, this is really a fun event so all are encouraged to bring their plant-loving friends and neighbors. Refreshments will also be served.

BABYSITTING CLASS AT USC VHH
USC Verdugo Hills Hospital family education program offers babysitting classes starting on April 26.
The classes are tailored for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 15. Classes will be held on April 26, May 31 and June 28. Each class is a single, one-time class, held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the hospital.
The class is an interactive course that teaches participants valuable skills, including infant/child CPR, basic first aid, home/auto safety, accident prevention, telephone skills, safety tips, when to call 911, poison control, fire/earthquake plans and other helpful childcare advice. Participants will receive an infant/child CPR participation card and a babysitting certificate upon completion of the course.
Classes are offered at USC-VHH, located at 1812 Verdugo Blvd. in Glendale 91208, in the Council Room (located on the fourth floor).

NEWS FROM THE LLHS
Little Landers Historical Society announces a program in May that focuses on the importance of collecting oral histories and saving the stories about our lives, experiences and the times in which we lived. Guest speaker will be oral historian and filmmaker Ellie Kahn.
On May 10, Kahn will be at Bolton Hall to offer a hands-on workshop experience in collecting oral histories. Learn the basics of interviewing and sharing experiences in order to collect our personal and family’s stories.
The program is free and open to the public and begins at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
Little Landers Historical Society announces the April revival of Granny’s Attic Treasure Sale and the LLHS famous plant sale. Both events are fundraisers for Little Landers and Bolton Hall, and will be held at Bolton Hall on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Donations of new, gently used, antique and vintage collectibles may be brought to Bolton Hall during public hours any Tuesday or Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. or on Friday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For plant donations, please call Bolton Hall to make arrangements.
Bolton Hall shoppers can purchase lunch at the nearby Elks Lodge Chili Cook-Off on April 26 and return to Bolton Hall for more shopping.

REUNION FOR HRS CLASS OF 1954
A weekend-long reunion for the Holy Redeemer School class of 1954 is this weekend. CALTECH JAZZ BANDS TO PERFORM
The Caltech jazz bands, directed by Barb Catlin, present their 14th Annual Jazz Festival featuring the Caltech Monday Night Jazz Ensemble directed by Barb Catlin. Also on the program is the Nick Broten Group, Pasadena City College Jazz ensemble directed by Andrea Baker Wilkerson and Lounge-O-Rama.
This event takes place on Saturday, April 26 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Gates Annex Patio on the Caltech campus located just west of Dabney Lounge.
Admission is free and no tickets are required. Some seating will be provided and audience members are welcome to bring food and blankets for a picnic on the lawn.

SPECIAL CONCERT AT THORNE HALL
The Caltech-Occidental Symphony and the combined Glee clubs of Occidental College and Caltech will present a special concert at Occidental College’s Thorne Hall on Saturday, April 26 at 7:30 pm. The performance of Mozart’s Requiem, with 100 singers, marks the first time in several years that the choruses of the two colleges will combine in concert. The program begins with Tchaikovsky’s “Violin Concerto,” performed by Caltech senior Misha Raffiee. Allen Robert Gross, director of the Caltech-Occidental Symphony, conducts.
The program will be repeated on Sunday, April 27, at the First United Methodist Church in Pasadena, at 3:30 p.m.

‘SYDNEY PAIGE: MISS SCHOOL, MISS OUT’ AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

Brockmeyer will be reading the story “Sydney Paige: Miss School, Miss Out”, which she created (written by Margery Hannah). ‘JUDICIAL ACTIVISM’ ON THE SUPREME COURT
The Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club will meet Sunday, April 27 to hear Professor Amanda Hollis-Brusky from the Political Science Dept. of Pomona College speak about the Supreme Court’s decisions in Shelby County vs. Holder (VRA) and Citizens United/McCutcheon (campaign finance) and how these cases represent a new breed of “judicial activism” on the Supreme Court. The meeting will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the home of Charles and Maria Guinta in La Cañada.
Hollis-Brusky, an assistant professor of Politics, has spoken to the club before. She teaches courses on American politics, constitutional law & theory, and legal institutions. She is also one of the co-founders of the Southern California Law and Social Science (SoCLASS) Forum (www.soclass.org).

NEUTRA RUN/WALK FOR HEALTH PLANNED
The public is invited to race for tax-deductible donations on Sunday, April 27 for the preservation of modernist icons of the recent past, and the VDL Research house II in Silverlake.
Throughout the day there will be runs, walks and bike rides around the lake from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. followed by house tours at VDL all afternoon. In addition, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., a five-station Interiors Tour of Neutra designs at and around Neutra Place, just south of the Meadow on SLB.
In the evening at the VDL starting at 5 p.m., activities will be ongoing until 9:30 p.m. Wine tasting is at 6:45 p.m. and at 7 p.m. is a VIP dinner and reception.

‘LEGACY LUNCHEON’ PLANNED

CPR CLASSES AT USC VHH
USC Verdugo Hills Hospital offers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training classes to community members to help them learn this important skill.
Classes will be held on May 7 and June 28 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Heartsaver certification classes, which are part of the hospital’s family education program, provide instruction for CPR skills, including adult/child one-person rescue and choking maneuvers.

CALTECH-OCCIDENTAL CONCERT BAND TO PERFORM IN WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL
The Caltech – Occidental Concert Band, directed by William Bing, is going to perform in Walt Disney Concert Hall on June 18. This celebrated ensemble, which has performed in Carnegie Hall and the Great Wall, will perform as part of a concert of ensembles from around the world.
On the program will be the world premiere of a work for organ and concert band by the band’s multi-talented composer-in-residence, Dr. Leslie Deutsch. Also appearing on the program and conducting his own work will be world famous composer and conductor, Frank Ticheli. Paul Asimow, a professor of geology and geochemisty, will also guest conduct, and Kjerstin Williams, who received her PhD in robotics from Caltech, will be the vocal soloist singing songs composed by George Gershwin.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. at Disney Hall. Tickets go on sale around May 1, and will be available for $30 each at Ticketmaster or the box office at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
