I was out walking my dog Whiskey on Tuesday night enjoying the warm breezes and a moon that seemed pretty darned full. I love the feel of a warm summer breeze – even if it’s in May. The early part of this week reminded me that summer is truly right around the corner and with that comes a lot of opportunity.

Opportunity for what? Glad you asked! This is the time of the year that scholarships are being awarded with money raised from local golf tournaments including the CV and Montrose Verdugo City chambers of commerce. The chambers are both holding golf tournaments in the next few weeks, so sign up.

The Glendale Latino Association is also distributing scholarships funded in part through their monthly mixers. Think about attending one. You’ll get to know some interesting people and be contributing to a good cause.

Next week is Prom Plus, the after-prom event for Crescenta Valley High School seniors and their guests. This $25,000 party at the YMCA is a way to keep our kids safe after prom and give them somewhere fun to go. The money is raised over the course of the year through various fundraisers including  Taste of Montrose on May 4. Part of the money raised will be used to purchase prizes for the seniors; everything from microwave ovens (for college dorm rooms) to gasoline cards will be bought. Fortunately, Prom Plus has been receiving generous donations of gift cards, products and cold hard cash, but more is always needed. Prom Plus is from midnight to 5 a.m. and during that time food is being served and plenty of activities (including a mechanical bull and casino) to try out. Think about writing a check to Prom Plus or how about volunteering? Card dealers are always needed.

And if you want to really to learn about donating to a worthy cause, read Mary O’Keefe’s cover story.

I am compelled to offer a quick note regarding Jim Chase. I have received a lot of comments regarding Jim’s departure from the CV Weekly. Some have questioned whether the “powers that be” pressured him to go. Well, folks, being the publisher, I am the powers that be and was saddened when Jim came to me to say that after more than four years of writing his column he had said about all he had to.

Feel free to drop Jim a line at jim@wordchaser.com. I know he’d be pleased to hear from you.
