Self Defense Classes Offered

The City of Glendale is offering two free self-defense classes for women and girls sponsored by the Commission on the Status of Women and one self-defense class for men and boys co-sponsored by the YMCA of Glendale. The classes will be taught by SHIELD Self-Defense, founded by Nelson Nio, which offers a martial-arts-based self-defense program for ages 12 and up.

The classes for women are on Wednesday, June 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Glendale Police Dept., large community room at 131 N. Isabel St., Glendale.

The second is on Wednesday, June 25 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Glendale Community College, student center conference room (SC212) at 1500 N. Verdugo Road in Glendale.

The class for men and boys only is on Wednesday, June 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Glendale Police Dept., large community room.

Third Annual Glendale City Golf Championship

The Glendale Parks and Open Space Foundation, Scholl Canyon Golf Course, Oakmont Country Club, American Golf and The Local Trusted Choice Insurance Agents announced the Third Annual Glendale City Golf Championship on July 23 and July 28. These community organizations will together host the annual championship to benefit the local parks and open space.

Golfers of all abilities are invited to come out and play to support The Glendale Parks and Open Space Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization.  For more information on the event, visit www.GlendaleGolfChampionship.com.

BAS TO TAKE PART IN CHALLENGE

Beginning June 1, the Burbank Animal Shelter (BAS) was one of 50 animal shelters nationwide to participate in the fifth and final ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. The Burbank Animal Shelter is competing for a chance at more than $600,000 in grant funding, including a grand prize of $100,000.

The 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge is a nationwide competition for animal shelters (and their communities) aimed at increasing animal adoptions as well as returning more to their owners than ever before.

The BAS will hold numerous events and promotions throughout the competition including $5 Feline Fridays. All pet adoptions will include, spay or neuter, vaccinations and microchips.
