The Crescenta-Cañada YMCA Dragon Swim Team finished off its YMCA League season by facing off against eight other Southern California Y teams this past weekend. Propelled by stellar individual efforts, great relay performances, and outstanding coaching; the Dragons dominated the team point tally to take the number one spot at the championship meet.
Harrison Thai made a huge contribution to the Y-Champs win by breaking three Southern California Y records with his swims in the 13-14 Boys 200 Free, 100 Fly and 200 Individual Medley. His time of 1:46.99 in the 200 Free broke a SoCal Y swimming record set in 1972. Record times in the relays almost fell as well. The 11-12 boy’s team of Samuel Jo, Kris Abramyan, Eric Park and Kevin Park were less than half a second short of breaking the 200 Free Relay record with a time of 1:45.39. Harrison Thai, Josh Lo, Kyle Otazu, and Bruce Park were just a second and a half shy of a record win in the same event for 13-14 boys with a time of 1:36.91. In the girls division, Yvette Kim (9) and Iva Icheva (13) continued their reign of the pool, coming in first in all of their events. Yvette posted a personal best in the 50 Free with a time of 27.49. Among junior boys, Alec Stepanian placed first in all his events as well.
Swimming his final Y-Champs was Chris Park (17), a senior at Ribet Academy. A ten-year veteran of the Dragons, Chris finished in style, taking first place in the 100 Butterfly, as well as posting third place finishes in the 50 Free and 100 Free. Chris will be passing the torch to a talented group of younger swimmers.
