The Crescenta-Cañada Lions Club recently held its annual scholarship lunch. Six students, three from Crescenta Valley High School and three from La Cañada High School, met at Cordon’s Smokehouse with members of their family for the distribution of the scholarships. From Crescenta Valley, the three winners were Crystal Im, Jaeho Joshua Lee, and Sarah Yoon. From La Cañada were Alexis Lorenz, Robert Fuelling, and Brendan Murran. Unfortunately, Murran was unable to make it to the lunch so his father, Aiden Murran, came in his place.
The students found out about the scholarship, which is only available to CVHS and LCHS students, through their schools. Recipient Lee followed in the footsteps of his sister who won the Lions Club scholarship three years ago.
Each of the students were pleased by their award. Im said she was grateful for the scholarship because it was “one more burden not to worry about.” Fuelling, like most of the other winners, planned to use his scholarship to help pay for textbooks. Lorenz and Lee earmarked the scholarship money to help out with their tuition costs.
The applications asked about grades and extracurricular and community service mainly. Art Rinaman, from the Lions Club, said the two main criteria for awarding scholarships are financial need and the student’s involvement in the community.
The scholarship program has been established for over 20 years and the club members said that each year it gets more fun giving out the scholarships.
“The fun part of helping students through the Lions Club . . . is to get to meet the students . . . these are hardworking kids,” said Rinaman.
