Max Burton, 18, a recent graduate of Crescenta Valley High School, will be starting at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as a freshman for the fall semester. He will study manufacturing engineering. Burton received a “full-ride” scholarship to underwrite the cost of tuition, room and board, and expenses for his entire college education. The scholarship was presented at a recognition brunch on July 13 at a private home in Sherman Oaks.

Presenting the award was the Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles (JBBBSLA) board member and scholarship committee chair Daniel Siegel.

Burton’s was one of three full-ride scholarships awarded by JBBBSLA this year. In total, the organization gave 31 scholarships totaling $76,850, not including the full-ride awards, to students aged 18-27 who will use the funds to pay their tuitions at community colleges, yeshivas, four-year colleges and graduate schools. This year’s scholarships ranged from $750 to $5,000.

To be eligible, students had to participate in the JBBBSLA mentoring program for at least two years and be enrolled full time in a post-secondary institution.

Since being established in 1990, JBBBSLA’s scholarship program has awarded more than $1.5 million to about 400 deserving students. A full listing of JBBBSLA scholarship winners can be found on the Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles website www.jbbbsla.org/programs/scholarships/.
