STEPPING STONE PLAYERS PRESENT ‘YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN’
This year’s Stepping Stone Players’ production is  “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown.”  The production will feature two casts, one with actors under 18, the other with actors over 18.

Performances continue in the Little Theater in Hoover High School, located at 651 Glenwood Road in Glendale. Tickets are available now for performances on various dates at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets for all shows can be bought at

The Stepping Stone Players is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It is a Glendale-based community theatre group with a vision to create a sense of community through live theatre by encouraging the participation of people of all backgrounds and skill levels in unique opportunities for children and adults to explore, learn, perform and mentor in every facet of live theatre.

ALG PLANS SUMMERTIME CHRISTMAS SALE
The Assistance League – Glendale is having a huge summertime Christmas sale from Aug. 7-9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will feature literally thousands of used, near-new and never-used bargains for decorating, entertaining, wearing, gift making, gift wrapping, and gift giving. The array of holiday bargains include trees, strings of lights, wreaths, swags, poinsettias, greeting cards, and ornaments; also gift wrap, gift bags, ribbon, candles, and cookie tins. There are huge collections of stuffed animals, angels, reindeer, elves, snowmen, dolls and kids’ toys. For holiday parties there are tablecloths, runners, napkins, festive dinnerware, goblets, centerpieces and vintage silver. The sale also features religious items, holiday clothing and jewelry. Many items are only 25 cents to $5.

The sale is at the ALG location, 314 E. Harvard, Glendale, ½ block east of the Glendale Central library.  Parking is free.

COMMODORES FEATURED AT STARLIGHT BOWL
The City of Burbank concludes the 2014 Starlight Bowl Summer Concert Series with a performance by the Commodores on Aug. 9.

The Commodores bring their soulful sound and slew of hits to the Bowl. Their mellow melodies are a perfect end to a spectacular series of shows.

Tickets are available online at www.StarlightBowl.com or may be purchased in person at the Community Services Building, 150 N. Third St., third floor, in Burbank.

Picnic baskets are welcome. BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse will also be offering tasty, on-site concessions. Individual tickets range from $8-$15. The military discount price for individual tickets is $8. The Park Lover’s Pass, grass seating only, is $60 for the entire summer season of shows.

Parking is $8 cash per vehicle. Carpooling is recommended. Parking opens at 4:30 p.m., the gates open at 5:30 p.m., and all concerts begin at 6:30 p.m.

LEARN FARSI AT THE YMCA
The Y offering Farsi language class every Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Crescenta Cañada YMCA.

The purpose of this class is to further Iranian (Persian) language and culture for all ethnic groups. Students will learn basic reading, writing and speaking skills for the Farsi language. This is for all levels and all ages.

‘CITIZEN TANOUYE’ SCREENING AT GLENDALE LIBRARY
The documentary film “Citizen Tanouye” will be screened on Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Glendale Central Library in the auditorium. The presentation is free and open to the public.

“Citizen Tanouye” follows the life-changing journey of eight Torrance High School students who set out to uncover the story of Ted Tanouye, a Japanese-American Torrance High School alumnus, World War II hero, and Medal of Honor recipient. As the ethnically diverse group digs in to discover Tanouye’s story, they uncover the civil rights abuses suffered during the war years by Japanese-Americans such as Tanouye’s family. The students plowed through archival materials, searched online, and conducted insightful interviews with war veterans to get to the bottom of what Tanouye and his family experienced.

Documentary filmmaker and Glendale resident Robert Horsting produced and co-directed the film with Craig Yahata. Horsting will be present to take questions after the screening. The original music for the film was composed by Stephen James Taylor, a frequent composer for Disney Imagineering and an Eagle Rock resident.

‘WINE AND WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP’ AT McGROARTY

PFAR HOSTING GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Pasadena Foothills Association of Realtors will host its charitable foundation Annual Golf Tournament Day at the Aces on Friday, Aug. 22 at Arroyo Seco Golf Course in South Pasadena. There is a $20,000 hole-in-one opportunity and a silent and live auction planned.

The afternoon will offer a poker tournament with first, second and third place prize opportunities. In 2013 the foundation distributed over $100,000 including $1,000 scholarships, to 10 foothill area high schools.

TGHS TO HOLD GALA, BENEFIT
The Glendale Historical Society (TGHS) will present its inaugural gala and benefit on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 7p.m. to 10 p.m. The event will be held at the historic Brockman Clock Tower Estate, a Glendale landmark and the centerpiece of the newly designated Brockmont Park Historic District. It provides a rare experience to tour one of Glendale’s most exclusive homes and support preservation efforts of TGHS.

The Spot Gourmet is catering the event and there will also be a silent auction. TGHS will also be recognizing outstanding work in the community with the presentation of its annual Preservation and Volunteer awards.

On Monday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore hosts a signing for Daryl Brown, son of the legendary James Brown. Daryl, who is an accomplished musician himself, discusses his new book “Inside the Godfather,” which presents informative and enlightening stories about James Brown that go beneath the surface to explore his complex life and personality.

BLOOMIN’ SQUARES SQUARE DANCE CLASS
The next Bloomin’ Squares square dance class begins on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Sunland-Tujunga Municipal Building.

Sessions are open to everyone, no partner required, LGBTQ* and friends.

For those who think of square dancing, images may arise of hillbillies stomping around in a barn shouting “do-si-do,” blue-haired ladies in silly dresses, and horrible times spent in gym classes in grammar or high school listening to fiddle music while a bored gym teacher read out of a book.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE S/T BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also support programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)3 organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick-up large donations. THEN AND NOW EXHIBIT
Little Landers Historical Society announces the opening of a new temporary exhibit at Bolton Hall Museum. “Then and Now” features historic photos of places in the foothills community compared to photos of the same locations in more recent times. Little Landers member Craig Durst determined the exact location from which each old photo was taken and reproduced the same photo taking into account the time of year, time of day and weather conditions to duplicate each of the original pictures.

“Then and Now” will be available for viewing at Bolton Hall through October. Bolton Hall is open to the public on Tuesday and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free.

\BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
