JLP INC. TO HOLD ANNUAL OPEN HOUSES
The Junior League of Pasadena, Inc. (JLP) is holding three prospective member open houses at the League’s headquarters. Women from the Pasadena area and beyond interested in membership and learning about the League’s legacy of leadership and service in the community are welcome to attend.

TGHS TO HOLD GALA, BENEFIT
The Glendale Historical Society (TGHS) will present its inaugural gala and benefit on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event will be held at the historic Brockman Clock Tower Estate, a Glendale landmark and the centerpiece of the newly designated Brockmont Park Historic District. It provides a rare experience to tour one of Glendale’s most exclusive homes and support preservation efforts of TGHS.
The Spot Gourmet is catering the event and there will also be a silent auction. TGHS will also be recognizing outstanding work in the community with the presentation of its annual Preservation and Volunteer awards.

CHRISTIAN BOOKS & VEGGIES HOLDING GRAND REOPENING
The grand reopening celebration for Christian Books & Veggies, an Adventist Book Center, is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The event will feature live music by area Christian musicians and vegetarian food sampling, book signings, giveaways to the first 50 customers and tacos and kettle corn. An exercise team will conduct fitness sessions during the day.
Christian Books & Veggies is operated by the Southern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (SCC), the Adventist church administration’s offices, which are located next door to the store.

Daryl, who is an accomplished musician himself, discusses his new book “Inside the Godfather,” which presents informative and enlightening stories about James Brown that go beneath the surface to explore his complex life and personality.

‘UNFINISHED SPACES’ AT BRAND LIBRARY & ART CENTER
The Brand Associates’ REEL ART Series presents the award-winning documentary “Unfinished Spaces,” a film by Alysa Nahmias and Benjamin Murray. The film chronicles the story of Cuba’s ambitious National Art Schools project, designed in the wake of Castro’s revolution. The project was neglected and forgotten and eventually rediscovered as an architectural masterpiece.
Special guest Dr. Ken Breisch will make a brief slide presentation showing other modernist experiments that, unlike the art schools project, did come to fruition in Cuba after the revolution. Dr. Breisch will also lead a discussion and answer questions.
The screening will take place on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at Brand Library & Art Center (Recital Hall). Admission is free and open to the public. MUTT STRUT RETURNS TO CV PARK
The 4th Annual California Council of the Blind 2 and 5K “Mutt Strut” walk/run will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Crescenta Valley Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
Everyone is invited to bring a canine friend, whether a trained guide dog which assists a blind or visually impaired individual to safely and efficiently traverse their community, or the family pooch which gives so much unconditional love and companionship. In addition to the human and doggie camaraderie, plenty of food and drink will be available.
All proceeds go to promote the programs and services of the California Council of the Blind, the largest and oldest self-help organization of blind and visually impaired persons in California. CCB oversees several successful programs to assist members and nonmembers alike including a scholarship program that has assisted scores of blind and visually impaired students to achieve their educational goals; a no-interest equipment loan fund so that blind and low vision individuals may obtain or retain remunerative employment; a crisis fund to help with financial emergencies; and many others.

THE STORY OF WEATHERWOLDE CASTLE
Tujunga’s Weatherwolde Castle, built in 1928, was almost lost to the wrecking ball in 2005 to make way for new development. On Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m., Little Landers Historical Society hosts William Malouf, Weatherwolde’s owner, for a presentation of the history of Weatherwolde Castle and how it was saved from demolition. The presentation will take place at Bolton Hall.
Malouf specializes in preservation and restoration of historical structures. Following a successful battle by Sunland-Tujunga community members to keep the home from being demolished, he and his wife Tara stepped in to buy this unique home and restore it to its original glory. He will tell attendees about historical documents and artifacts found in the home that clear up some of the rumors and mysteries surrounding Weatherwolde Castle.
This program is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

RATTLE PRESENTS ‘BLAST FROM THE PAST’
Rattle magazine will host the next installment of the 2014 Rattle Reading Series on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. Every second Sunday, Rattle continues to gather a selection of performers at Flintridge Bookstore from around the country for a series of poetry readings to celebrate the magazine.
The September Rattle Reading Series presents a collection of Los Angeles poets from previous issues of the magazine. What did we publish back then, and what have they been up to lately? Paul Suntup’s poem “Olive Oil” appeared in the summer 2004 issue. Lynne Thompson has appeared in Rattle seven times, making her one of the magazine’s most frequently published poets. Her most recent contribution was “Antilles. Lesser.” in summer 2010. Steve Westbrook’s “Cumberland Gap” also appeared in that issue, and was a semi-finalist for the Rattle Poetry Prize.

POPs PRESENT MOVING PRODUCTION OF ‘TOSCA’
Pacific Opera Project presents six performances of Puccini’s “Tosca” in Pasadena. Made possible by funding from over 150 backers through a successful Kickstarter campaign, this will be POP’s most ambitious production to date with a stellar cast and a 22-piece orchestra.
“Tosca” will be the 13th fully staged opera produced by POP and will incorporate a staging device rarely seen in theatre (much less in an opera with a full orchestra): moving the entire production from one location to another throughout the performance. This “Tosca” will take place in three separate venues, all within St. James Church that each represent another location within the opera.

31st ANNUAL DAY OF THE DEAD ALTARS & EPHEMERA
The Folk Tree presents its 31st annual Day of the Dead Altars & Ephemera exhibition from Sept. 27 – Nov. 2. The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. THEN AND NOW EXHIBIT
Little Landers Historical Society announces the opening of a new temporary exhibit at Bolton Hall Museum. “Then and Now” features historic photos of places in the foothills community compared to photos of the same locations in more recent times. Little Landers member Craig Durst determined the exact location from which each old photo was taken and reproduced the same photo taking into account the time of year, time of day and weather conditions to duplicate each of the original pictures.
“Then and Now” will be available for viewing at Bolton Hall through October.
Bolton Hall is open to the public on Tuesday and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m. This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
