Pretty Mayberry-ish After All

Those who have lived up here for a while have undoubtedly heard the term “Mayberry” to describe the foothills community. I consider it a compliment – after all, what’s wrong with Aunt Bee’s fried chicken served with a side of homey advice? Or knowing the first names of the people at your favorite grocery store? The bonus for us in the foothills is that while we may feel that we are removed from the strife of living in the “big city,” we are a mere 20-minute drive from the heart of Los Angeles (okay, when traffic works with us).

To celebrate the community that is the Crescenta Valley, there are a couple of events in the next two weeks or so that you might want to take part in.

This Saturday, Sept. 6 is an all-community picnic at Crescenta Valley Park. It is hosted by Prom Plus and is part of the organization’s 20th anniversary celebration. From 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., there will be information booths set up with fun games to play for free. To let folks experience some of the fun things that Prom Plus offers every year at its event, there will be a mechanical shark and a dunk tank on hand, too, provided by L.A. Partyworks. You’ll see some familiar faces being dunked (including CV Chamber president Steve Pierce). Perhaps the best part is that it’s free to ride the shark or try your dunking skills. There’ll be music and a barbecue, too, (a nominal charge for food). So please plan to stop by.

On Sept. 11, a Remembrance Parade will take place. It begins at 9:11 a.m. and will travel to locations in the Crescenta Valley to honor the victims of Sept. 11, 2001. The parade will pass five fire stations, local schools, the CV Sheriff’s Station and Montrose substation of the Glendale Police Dept. A special ceremony honoring first responders will be held Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Bob Smith Toyota.

Then on Sept. 12, 2014 (9/12/14) we’re celebrating all things La Crescenta – 91214. CV Weekly will be publishing a map next week of key La Crescenta sites that we encourage people to visit. There will also be a brief description of each site. Plans are still being made to have refreshments at one of the locations. (If you’d like to donate toward the refreshments, send me an email.)

Does this mean we’re small town up here? I certainly hope so.
