The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from this morning at 10 a.m. to tonight at 9 p.m. for the San Gabriel mountains, adjacent foothills and Antelope Valley high deserts due to hot weather and unstable conditions with potential for isolated dry lighting strikes and gusty erratic winds near thunderstorms.

Temperatures continue to climb with downtown Los Angeles tying a record high today of 103 degrees Fahrenheit that was reached just before noon. The last time the temperature in the city reached 103 was in 1909, said Stuart Seto, weather specialist at the National Weather Service Oxnard.

“The normal [for Crescenta Valley/Glendale area] this time of year is around the mid-80s,” Seto said.

The Red Flag Warning was issued due to the multiple days of high temperatures, moderate low humidifies and extremely dry fuels. In addition there is slight chance of thunderstorms to the eastern San Gabriel Mountains and Antelope Valley this afternoon. All of this with dry lightning and gusty winds possible puts the area in danger for fire.

Local residents seeking relief from the heat can go to the Sparr Heights Community Center, 1613 Glencoe, Glendale, one of the cooling stations approved by the City of Glendale.
