CV Alliance invites parents to Walk & Talk on Wednesday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at CV Park, parent sessions at the Y on Tuesday evenings from 7:15 p.m. to  8:30 p.m. that begin on Oct. 7, and learn from Dan Evans how your social media postings affect your choices on Thursday, Oct. 9 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the CV High Library. Bring your child to this one!  We’ll be checking IDs at Oktoberfest from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Oct. 4; while you’re there, look for our signs! We hope that at least one of these programs catches your attention and fits your schedule.

Our grant requires us to engage in community change strategies; these programs provide information (programs), enhance skills (things learned at programs), increase access (first daytime event!), and change physical design (signs).

We appreciate all the people who participated at Saturday’s DEA Take Back. Many thanks to our partners: the Glendale Police, CV Sheriff’s Volunteers, Community Prevention Council, student volunteers, and the CV Weekly. Many of the people who cleaned out their cabinets read about it in this paper.

It was the last Drug Take Back; the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will allow unused narcotic painkillers such as OxyContin to be returned to pharmacies. Until now, pharmacies were not allowed to accept unused opioid painkillers. Consumers will also be permitted to mail unused prescription medications to an authorized collector in packages that will be available at pharmacies and locations including senior centers and libraries, The New York Times reports.

According to the Washington Post, new numbers released by the Dept. of Health and Human Services indicate that from 2002 to 2013 the rate of regular alcohol use among teens aged 12 to 17 declined from 17.6% to 11.6%. Teen marijuana use, a contentious topic now that several states have legalized marijuana sales, is also on the decline. Recreational use of prescription painkillers saw a similar decline. These findings come from the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an annual, nationally-representative survey of roughly 70,000 Americans aged 12 and older.
