Plenty To Do

Have you noticed how the calendar seems to ebb and flow with activities? Sometimes you can gauge how busy you’re going to be by comparing previous years; other times you feel like you’ve been totally blindsided.

I remember being at The Finest & CVW Anniversary party at the end of September at Deukmejian Wilderness Park, standing under the twilight sky, mentally preparing myself for a busy October.    I thought I had better enjoy the tranquility, because it was going to be hard to find in the coming weeks.

I wasn’t wrong.

This month was kicked off with a stellar – and hot – Oktoberfest along Honolulu Avenue. CV Weekly sponsored one of the wine booths over by Citibank across from Montrose Travel. Under the direction of our own Lisa Stanners, the booth ran like a clock. Between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., I must have poured a hundred glasses of wine – two of my sons were at my side till 7 p.m. When the booth shut down at 10 p.m. (no alcohol is served after 10 p.m.), I made my way to one of the two snack booths that Prom Plus and Prom Plus Club manned. Typical of members of Prom Plus Club (students), they stayed way past the end of the festival. Under the guidance of Mary O’Keefe, Prom Plus co-vice president, the kids cleaned up not only their booths, but helped the ones nearby. I think they didn’t leave Honolulu until after midnight.

As far as this weekend … well, where do I start? Saturday is packed full. Love dogs? You can head over to either the dog park at CV Park for the second annual dog park festival or to Verdugo Park for the City of Glendale K-9 demonstrations. K-9s in the Park is part of the annual Kiwanis Incredible Duck Splash that is at Verdugo Park from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday. It’s a lot of fun, free to attend and those who adopt ducks can see them race in “Lake Verdugo” for the chance to win thousands of dollars in prizes.

Looking for something a little more cultural? Stop by the 3rd Annual Armenian Korean Festival on Saturday at Crescenta Valley High School quad from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. This year will include participation from members of the local Latino community to guarantee a true celebration of cultures, community and heritage.
