Every October, members of the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy community can be found on the golf links teeing off for a good cause. The event? The annual Harry G. Johansing Golf Tournament and Dinner, which raises scholarship money for FSHA students with financial need. This event is typically celebrated with much fanfare, and this year there’s has even more reason to celebrate as October marks 40 years of giving. To pay tribute to this important anniversary, a committee of early golf tournament chairs will be honored at the event. They include Mike Smith, Tim Smith, Bob Pernecky, Angelo Mozilo and John Krappman (in honor of his father Andy Krappman).

Organized by the FSHA executive board in 1974, the first golf tournament included 16 foursomes and collected close to $6,000 for the school. Over the years, attendance has grown and new features have been added to the tournament. This year, golfers can expect a hole-in-one contest (current prize: a new car!), Mulligan tickets, a chance to “Hit the Heart,” a putting contest among participants, and a putting contest among the sisters of FSHA called “Bet on the Sisters.” Last year, more than 200 golfers took part.

It’s no surprise that the golf tournament is a lot of fun, and it also raises a lot of money to help FSHA students. To date, the Harry G. Johansing Scholarship Fund amounts to $1,453,000. This past year, 11 highly qualified young women who exhibited significant financial need in order to attend FSHA were selected to be Johansing scholars. Scholarships ranged from $4,500 to $10,000 and were distributed in addition to traditional financial aid to offset tuition.

“This scholarship makes it possible for me to attend FSHA. I love this school and I am so lucky to go here,” said Rebecca Calix, one recipient of the Johansing scholarship.

There’s still time to get involved. The golf tournament and dinner will be split into two days of festivities. The dinner will take place on Sunday, Oct. 12, followed by the golf tournament and cocktail party on Monday, Oct. 13. Both events will be held at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.
