QUILT EXHIBIT
The community is invited to a quilt exhibit at the La Cañada Public Library taking place through Oct. 30. The beautiful quilts are the handiwork of a few talented women from Islamic Congregation of La Cañada Flintridge.
Running Stitch is a group made up of local women who meet weekly to create handmade items from recycled materials. The items presented are one-of-a-kind and are something to be appreciated.

BURBANK COMMUNITY YMCA PLANS FUNDRAISER
As the Burbank Community YMCA winds down a year-long celebration of its 90th anniversary, it will go out with a bang with a Cheers to 90 Years fundraiser, today, Oct. 9 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Hosted by Nickelodeon Animation Studio, the event will be highlighted by wine and olive oil tastings, a Mediterranean-inspired buffet, bar offerings, live music, dancing, a silent auction, fun activities and a gift bag. Attendees will also be treated to insider’s access to Nickelodeon’s art gallery, which is not generally open to the public. Business or cocktail attire. Must be 18 years or older to attend.

GLENDALE MEMORIAL HOSTING BREAST CANCER SYMPOSIUM
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Marcia Ray Breast Center at Dignity Health’s Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center will be hosting a breast cancer symposium today, Thursday, Oct. 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the main auditorium of the hospital.
The symposium will feature the hospital’s panel of breast cancer specialists who will be presenting information on what is new in the field of breast cancer as well as answering questions from the audience. The panel will also be demonstrating what goes on behind the scenes at a surgical tumor board where specialists review cancer cases together as a group and determine the best course of treatment for a patient’s disease.
Dinner will be provided and the event is free to the general public.

31st ANNUAL DAY OF THE DEAD ALTARS & EPHEMERA
The Folk Tree presents its 31st annual Day of the Dead Altars & Ephemera exhibition through Nov. 2. The show features traditional altars honoring loved ones who have passed, as well as installations dealing with broader contemporary issues and concepts about death. Also on view is a large selection of work in various media by local artists and Mexican folk art commemorating this major Mexican holiday, which falls on Nov. 1 and 2. THE HISTORY OF TUNA CANYON DETENTION STATION
Little Landers is hosting “The History of Tuna Canyon Detention Station (TCDS), City of Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Monument #1039” at its next community program at Bolton Hall Museum on Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
Tujunga’s WWII detention station was located at the corner of Tujunga Canyon Boulevard and La Tuna Canyon, now the site of a community golf course. TCDS was a temporary home to alien immigrants who were considered a threat to America’s security during WWII. Over 2,500 men were processed through TCDS from December 1941 through October 1943 before being relocated to other facilities throughout the western states.
The speaker for this program is local historian and former Little Landers Historical Society President Dr. Lloyd Hitt. Hitt is co-chair of the TCDS Coalition seeking to establish a memorial on the site of the original Tuna Canyon Detention Station.

FRED DONG SPEAKER FOR CV SIERRA CLUB
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club will present Fred Dong and his travel program of southern Chile and Argentina and the Patagonia region on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.
Dong’s presentation will include mountains, glaciers and lakes of Torres Del Paine, Los Glacieres National Parks, Tierra Del Fuego and other areas on his hiking, bus and ship tour. The glaciers in this area are the largest on the South American continent and the mountains are featured in hiking books of the region. He will introduce the flightless and the flying birds of these areas as well as other animals. Ushuaia, the southern-most city in the world will be visited.

FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE TO HOST ADVENTURER ODIER
On Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts explorer and documentarian Pierre Odier and his presentation on his journey from Siberia to Alaska – mostly on foot.
Odier will sign copies of his book “Some Last People: Vanishing Tribes of Bhutan, China, Mexico, Mongolia & Siberia,” which covers the nomads he encountered on his walking journey. Odier says that “’Some Last People’ is written in the spirit that others might join in recognizing the cause of those who struggle to maintain a place in this world.”
Odier is the founder of L’Image Odier Publishing, dedicated to the documentation, preservation and recording of minority peoples and remote civilizations. An explorer who enjoys adventure travel and photo expeditions, he is originally from Lausanne, Switzerland. He taught art at Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale and was the president of the National Photography Instructors Association and editor of a national photography publication. He is the two time past president of the
Adventurers’ Club of Los Angeles and current president of the Adventurers’ Foundation.

ANOTHER RAPP SCREENING PLANNED
RAPP will present “Stories From an Undeclared War” on Friday, Oct. 17, at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church.
“Stories From An Undeclared War” is a documentary about the Freedom Writers, who were at risk students form Long Beach. With encouragement, inspiring curriculum, and high expectations, these “unteachable” students beat the odds. “Stories From An Undeclared War” is the not yet released documentary that shows the actual events and process.
A similar educational success story is unfolding at Learning Works Charter School in Pasadena. The school offers a fresh start for underserved, at risk students and sees them through graduation. CVUMC provides support for Learning Works Charter School and offers support to the Pregnant and Parenting Teens Program.
Dr. Mikala Rahn, founder of Learning Works, will be at the screening with some students and alumnae. They will be available after the film for questions and discussion.

WRITING WORKSHOP HELD

There will be memory-stimulating exercises and brainstorming sessions with time allotted to write one or two holiday vignettes. There will also be additional ideas and priming questions to help continue writing at home.

BOOKSIGNING FOR DAN GAVIN
On Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore hosts a presentation and booksigning for Dan Gavin, former actor, athlete and singer, and 1952 graduate of the police academy who served on the Los Angeles Police Dept. (LAPD) for almost three decades before becoming a lawyer. He walked foot-beats in Watts, Skid Row, East Los Angeles and Beacon Street in San Pedro (once described as the toughest street in the world by Robert L. Ripley) and worked narcotics, vice, juvenile, homicide, burglary and robbery, eventually reaching the rank of commander. He holds seven degrees, including science, sociology, business administration, education and administration of justice. His book of short stories, “High Sanctuary,” which includes elements of magical realism, is inspired by his myriad experiences in various occupations in places all over the world.  “High Sanctuary” contains four diverse and riveting stories – compelling, real and surreal.

GCC PATRONS CLUB PLANS FASHION SHOW & LUNCHEON
On Friday, Nov. 7, the Patrons Club of Glendale Community College/GC Foundation, Inc. will hold its annual fundraiser at The Castaway, 1250 Harvard Road, Burbank, starting at 11:30 a.m. The event will benefit deserving students at Glendale Community College with scholarships and grants-in-aid. Last year, the Patrons Club awarded 63 scholarships and grants-in-aid. This year the Patrons Club will celebrate its 67th year of service to the college’s students.

‘GLENDALE COLLECTS’ BENEFITS BRAND LIBRARY

LEARN FARSI AT THE YMCA

SING WITH THE TOWNE SINGERS
Those who love to sing are invited to join the Towne Singers, a non-audition choir. Male voices in particular are needed, but all are welcome to join this family of musicians. The Bloomin’ Squares square dancing program is nothing like that! There’s no dancing in a barn or wearing silly clothes, and members dance to pop, rock and country music! Casual comfortable clothing is encouraged. Only $6 a class.

DBSA OFFERS SUPPORT GROUP
Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has a support group meeting every Tuesday at Vallejo Drive Adventist Church in Glendale every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. DBSA provides hope, help, and support through peer-based, recovery oriented empowering services, and resources when people need them and how they need to receive them.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)3 organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick up large donations. Call the library at (818) 352-4481 to schedule a pick-up.

THEN AND NOW EXHIBIT
Little Landers Historical Society announces the opening of a new temporary exhibit at Bolton Hall Museum. “Then and Now” features historic photos of places in the foothills community compared to photos of the same locations in more recent times. Little Landers member Craig Durst determined the exact location from which each old photo was taken and reproduced the same photo taking into account the time of year, time of day and weather conditions to duplicate each of the original pictures.
“Then and Now” will be available for viewing at Bolton Hall through October.
Bolton Hall is open to the public on Tuesday and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free.

T.O.P.S. – Take Off Pounds Sensibly – is a self-accountability group meeting held every Monday. Weigh in is from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).
Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
