Hi, CV!
When we decided we wanted to have a daytime program for those parents who couldn’t make a nighttime meeting, we thought about having a book club. Our target audience was elementary school parents who weren’t necessarily thinking about drugs and alcohol but who wanted to talk about issues facing them. After discussion, we nixed the book group idea and went for walking. We meet at CV Park, 3901 Dunsmore Ave. at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday mornings and take the 1.3-mile route. Parents get to meet each other and share thoughts. When you have a question for experts, Annie Ortega from Didi Hirsch and Alex Gussman, the new counselor at Rosemont, are there to answer. It’s a great group; the weather’s been perfect for a stroll and we encourage you to join us and bring up the things on your mind. You’ll be on your way by 9:30 p.m.
Paul Royer leads our parent sessions and, at the time of this writing, we’ve only met once. It was a great group, a mixture of regulars and newbies, and one salient thing Paul shared was that a friend’s mom influences your child. That reminded me of the 40 Developmental Assets and the suggestion that every child needs non-parental adults in her/his life. I know my daughter does, and I play that role for a few of her friends. Again, come to the parent session or Walk & Talk to meet one of those adults.
Last Thursday was our second Teen Trial about social media. Dan Evans shared useful information with the parents and students who attended. One parent said he provided a “launch pad to open up discussions with high school students.” Great! That’s the idea; keep the lines of communication open. Please join us at our next Teen Trials on “Emotional Intelligence v. Academic Intelligence” with Melina Sardar on Thursday night, Nov. 13, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. CVHS in the library, 2900 Community Ave. in La Crescenta.
Finally, do you like our billboard on Foothill and Glenwood? We put it up for Red Ribbon Week for your teen driver. Keep talking!
