On Oct. 8, Glendale Unified School District students joined children across the world for International Walk to School Day.
All the GUSD schools and several private schools joined in the walk. It is estimated that throughout the United States over 5,000 schools participated in the healthy event.
The International Walk and Bike to School Day was organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America in 1997 as a one day event focused on building awareness for the need for walkable communities. In 2000, the event expanded internationally when schools in the United Kingdom and Canada joined with the U.S. event. Both the UK and Canada had events that already promoted walking to school.
The event not only promotes walkable communities, but good health and exercise for children.
In Crescenta Valley all schools participated with biking, walking and even skateboarding or skating to school.
