La Canada Gladiators v. Covina Vikings

The La Canada Gladiator Jr. Gremlins took on the Covina Vikings last Saturday at Traweek Middle School. The Jr. Gremlins continue to display the core talent and dedication of a great football team.

La Canada started their attack quickly, forcing the Vikings to punt on their opening possession after three aggressive defensive stops, including two in the backfield by Alec Herberger and Maddox Freeman. Jake Lee then rushed for a 40-yard touchdown on the Gladiators first offensive possession. Receptions and rushes from Harrison Schloessman and Liam Pasten were impactful throughout the game. Abraham Saleah, Jackson Radabaugh and Jaymes Hale-Dietlein rounded out the Gladiator’s offense.

The Gladiator defense was boosted by the speed of Andrew Sibbrell, who pulled 5 flags, routinely disrupted Covina’s quarterback, and forced runners out of bounds. Carter Freeman, Gunner Herman, Joseph Padilla, Sebastian Pascuzzo, Mattheww Merrill, Aaron Matthews, Andrew Ortiz and Flynn Millstein all contributed to the Jr. Gremlin’s stout defensive play.

The Gladiators will take the field against the Pasadena Panthers this Saturday morning, October 25^th at La Canada High School.

La Canada 25 Covina Vikings 15

The La Canada Gladiators Junior Pee Wee improved to 5 – 0 this season with a 25 – 15 victory over the previously unbeaten, and previously unscored upon, Covina Vikings in Covina this past Saturday morning in Covina.

The LC Gladiators took the opening kickoff and drove down the field, as Daylon Beasley scored from thirty yards out less than four minutes in to take an early 7 – 0 lead.

On the subsequent kickoff Luca Cuneo recovered a fumble giving La Canada the ball back.  The Gladiators drove the ball down the field, but unfortunately turned it over on downs inside the Covina fifteen yard line.   On Covina’s second offensive play Jonah Cisneros recovered a fumble at the Covina eight yard line.  On the next play, Andrew Sharman scored on a reverse making the score 13 – 0 in favor of the Gladiators.

On the following kickoff, the Gladiators struck again as Jake Fitzgerald recovered a fumble that bounced off a Covina player.

In the second quarter, the Gladiators continued their dominance by driving down the field and converting on fourth down with a sensational catch by Luca Cuneo, that was thrown by Daylon Beasley.   The drive culminated with a nine yard touchdown by Andrew Sharman giving the Gladiators a 19 -0.

Covina scored on its next possession to cut the Gladiator lead to 19-7.  On their next possession, however, the Gladiators matched Covina’s fifty-two yard touchdown with one of their own as Daylon Beasley ran right up the middle due to the great play of the offense line.   This touchdown gave the Gladiators a comfortable 25 – 7 lead.

The Gladiator defense held tight as Covina gave the ball back on downs, which included a quarterback sack by DaMarcus Caruana.  The first half ended with the Gladiators leading 25 – 7.

The second half featured some tough defense by the Gladiators, including a quarterback sack by Matthew Watson, and a key stop on fourth and one by Jake Fitzgerald. Covina scored again late in the game and the final tally was 25-15 in favor of the Gladiators.

Next Saturday the Gladiators host Pasadena, at noon, at the LCHS football field, in another battle of unbeaten teams – as both teams currently have 5 -0 records.

La Canada 43 Covina Vikings 0

The La Canada Pee Wee Gladiator team travelled to Covina this past Saturday and defeated the Covina Vikings 43-0.  The Gladiators are now 4-1 on the season. Chase Center and Zeal Shumate led a brilliant offensive showing, and Colby Rees and Aaron Garcia captained a stingy defense as the Gladiators overwhelmed the hometown Vikings.

After kicking off and forcing a punt, the Gladiator offense went to work at its own 49 yard line. Luc Campanella and Kilian Trulik opened up the right side of the Covina defense on the game’s first two plays, both 10 yard runs by Chase Center.  Zeal Shumate then followed a devastating wedge from Duncan Sprengel, Mher Baranian, and Luke Waters for a 21 yard run down to the 9 yard line.  Center then capped off the drive with a nine yard dive behind center Adam Griffin.  Max Grant booted the two point conversion and the Gladiators jumped out to an 8-0 lead.

On the Vikings’ next possession, Center ripped the ball away from a Viking runner and weaved 61 yards for another score. Grant provided another 2-point conversion, and the Gladiators led 16-0 less than half way through the first quarter.

On the Vikings next possession, Dylan Luper, Samuel Galeano, and Lucas Ponce stood up the Covina offensive line.  The swarming Gladiators forced a third down fumble that Jacob Zabala alertly jumped on, giving the ball right back to the deadly Gladiator offense.  This time La Canada came up empty, but the Covina offense again ran into a wall of Gladiator defenders.  Max Herman, Max Grant and Anton Verheyen made big hits, and Verheyen pounced on another fumble.  The first quarter ended with the Gladiators forcing three turnovers and holding a 16-0 lead.

The Gladiators stormed into the second quarter with another quick touchdown drive, this one finished off with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Center to Shumate.  A great kick-off then pinned the Vikings deep in their own territory  The Vikings forged a couple of first downs against the stout Gladiators, but the tide turned when Ryan Villalobos swept into the Viking backfield and sacked the quarterback for an eight yard loss.  Two plays later and the Gladiators had the ball back.  Center and Shumate were again sprung free for twenty-five yard runs, with Center scoring on the second one.  After another two point conversion, the Gladiators closed out a dominating first half performance with a 30-0 lead.

A running clock in the second half was all that slowed the high flying Gladiators.  Starting on defense, they forced the Vikings to again turn the ball over on downs, and then launched a speedy 53-yard drive of their own.  Center again capped off the drive with a two-yard run.  Back on defense, four consecutive gang tackles gave the ball back to the Gladiators, but not before the third quarter expired with the Gladiators ahead 36-0.

Shumate scored again to open the fourth quarter, this a spectacular 36 yard sprint.  Louis De la Cruz then finished off the Vikings with a diving interception and a five yard run.  The final score was a lopsided 43-0.

The Gladiator Pee Wees next face rival Pasadena in a showdown at La Canada High on October 25th.

La Canada 42 Covina Vikings 0

On Saturday, the Gladiator Midget improved to 4-1 with a 42-0 drubbing of the Covina Vikings at Covina.

In the first quarter the Covina Vikings took the air out of the ball and ran the ball up the middle not taking any chances against the strong La Canada Gladiator defense led by Jack Stellwagen, Daniel Cho and Beau Hobbie.  The Covina offense were not interested in a passing attack against the LC defensive backs  Artis Candler, Carson Okland, Tyron Clark and Jahlique Stephens who have played excellent defense all season.  When the Gladiators finally was able to take over the ball on offense they marched down the field and scored a 45 yard touchdown on a pass play from Clark to Stephens.  The conversion was not successful and the first quarter ended with the Gladiators up 6-0.

Stephens took the ball around the end behind blocks of his offensive line and receivers for another LC touchdown.  Stephens also scored on a two-point conversion to make the score 14-0.    The offensive line was played by William Stewart, Daniel Cho, Cole Beadles, Jason Watson, Issac Faulkner, Carson Giles, and Louis Menacho.  The receivers were Okland, Da’Vion Rutherford, Michael Leyva and Thomas Mix who blocked for the Gladiator ground attack.

La Canada’s defense kept Covina Vikings scoreless with Lawrence Palmer, Ricardo Pena, James Smith and Tyron Clark making very good tackles to stop the Viking offense. Jacob Erdmier, Charlie Daves and Ruben Munoz also pitched in to stop the Vikings on defense.

In the second quarter, Clark took the ball 70 yards for another LC touchdown, although the conversion attempt failed making the score 20-0.

The tough La Canada defense then caused a fumble and recovered the deep in their own territory as the Vikings were driving. With a few seconds left before half time, receiver Da’Vion Rutherford showed off his speed by taking a reverse 80 yards for another Gladiator touchdown.   Candler successfully ran the conversion making the halftime score 28-0.

In the second half, the Gladiators controlled the ball and scored on a well-executed drive with long runs of 50 yards by Candler and a strong 20 yard run by Hobbie.  Candler finished the drive with a 5 yard dash into the end zone.  Clark was successful on the conversion to make the score 36-0 Gladiators.

In the final quarter the defensive line of Palmer, Smith, Erdmier, Pena, and Stewart fought a tough fight trying to keep a determined Covina from scoring.  The defense finally forced a fumble to stop the Viking fourth quarter drive on the Gladiators’ 5 yard line.  On the next play, Hobbie sprinted 95 yards around left end for La Canada’s final touchdown.  The conversion was no good and the game ended 42-0.

Next week the Gladiators face the Huntington Park Spartans at La Canada High School.
