EAMES COUPLE PROFILED AT BRAND LIBRARY
The Brand Associates REEL ART Series and the Glendale Historical Society present “Eames, the architect and the painter,” a film by Jason Cohn and Bill Jersey. The screening will take place today, Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at Brand Library & Art Center Recital Hall in Glendale. Admission is free and open to the public. BOOKSIGNING FOR DAN GAVIN
Tonight, Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore hosts a presentation and booksigning for Dan Gavin, former actor, athlete and singer, and 1952 graduate of the police academy who served on the Los Angeles Police Dept. (LAPD) for almost three decades before becoming a lawyer. He walked foot-beats in Watts, Skid Row, East Los Angeles and Beacon Street in San Pedro (once described as the toughest street in the world by Robert L. Ripley) and worked narcotics, vice, juvenile, homicide, burglary and robbery, eventually reaching the rank of commander. He holds seven degrees, including science, sociology, business administration, education and administration of justice. His book of short stories, “High Sanctuary,” which includes elements of magical realism, is inspired by his myriad experiences in various occupations in places all over the world.  “High Sanctuary” contains four diverse and riveting stories – compelling, real and surreal.

THE MOVIES BEFORE HOLLYWOOD
Little Landers welcomes speaker Galen Wilkes who will present “The Movies Before Hollywood” on Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall Museum.

Wilkes is a scholar and showman fascinated with the turn-of-the-century years and has been giving presentations since he was a teenager. He has interviewed many people who were part of the silent film era and worked with the late silent film pianist Jeanne McPartland in several series he produced in his native Connecticut. He also sought out surviving silent film accompanists to learn their stories. Wilkes is also well known as a ragtime pianist and historian. His piano works are spreading globally and he is the most-played contemporary rag composer. He has produced radio series in New York and California and has published widely about the era.

This program is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

ANNUAL GLENDALE COLLECTS EVENT
The Associates of Brand Library & Art Center (Brand Associates) are hosting “Glendale Collects” in a historic Glendale home on Sunday, Nov. 9 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This is the second annual Glendale Collects event in the home of a Glendale art collector. Attendees have the opportunity to connect face-to-face with fellow art lovers in the community and share their enthusiasm for the arts to benefit the continuation of free cultural programs at the Brand Library & Art Center. The event features an evening of wine, hors d’oeuvres, a silent art auction and a chance to enjoy the hosts’ wonderfully diverse art collection.

SHORB HONORED AT NEXT RATTLE READING
Rattle magazine will host the next installment of the 2014 Rattle Reading Series on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. Every second Sunday, Rattle continues to gather a selection of performers from around the country for a series of poetry readings to celebrate the magazine at Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeeshop.

This November, the Rattle Reading Series features two contributors to our current Poets of Faith issue, plus a tribute to the late Michael Shorb. The fall Poets of Faith issue features an inspiring conversation with poet and Catholic deacon Chris Anderson, and work from 41 believers, including Episcopalian poet Scott Corbet Riley and Lutheran poet Tim Sherry, who will be reading this month. We’ve also invited friends and family of Michael Shorb to present a tribute to his work. His poem “The Kindness of Strangers” appeared in the summer 2007 issue of Rattle. Shorb died of a rare form of cancer in 2012, and his book, “Whale Walker’s Morning,” was recently published posthumously.

As always, the audience is also encouraged to bring their own poems for an open mic.

SALON DE MUSIQUES PRESENTS ‘EMBARK TO THE KINGDOM OF BOHEMIA’
The next presentation of Salon de Musiques is on Nov. 9 and is titled “Embark to the Kingdom of Bohemia.” Featured will be three Czech masters, Josef Suk, Leos Janacek and Bedrich Smetana, along with the British composer Herbert Howells. Introduced by musicologist Julius Reder Carlson, the concert will be performed by a talented string quartet consisting of world renowned artists Jessica Guideri and Serena McKinney on violins, Rob Brophy on viola, and Ben Hong on cello.

An informal Q&A with the artists will follow the performance and a gourmet buffet dinner provided by Patina with French champagne will be served.

GLENDALE QUILT GUILD
The November featured speaker at the Glendale Quilt Guild is Cathy Hoover. The topic is Accept the Challenge. CALTECH-OCCIDENTAL PRESENTS FALL CONCERTS
The Caltech-Occidental Symphony presents its fall concerts on Saturday,

Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Thorne Hall at Occidental College and on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 3:30 p.m. in Ramo Auditorium at Caltech. Both concerts will have the same program.

Featured guest soloist is noted oboe pedagogue Catherine Del Russo.

The Caltech-Occidental Symphony is composed of students from Caltech, staff from JPL, students from nearby Occidental College, and members of the community. Its director, Allen Robert Gross, begins his 32nd year as conductor of the orchestra. Gross is also Music director and conductor of Orchestra Santa Monica.

The Caltech-Occidental concert band, directed by William Bing, presents its fall concert series. It will perform on Friday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. in Caltech Ramo Auditorium, featuring guest conductor Sharon Lavery, co-conductor of the USC Thornton wind ensemble. Also performing will be the Blair High School concert band directed by Michael Birnbryer.

SING WITH THE TOWNE SINGERS

Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has a support group meeting every Tuesday at Vallejo Drive Adventist Church in Glendale every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. DBSA provides hope, help, and support through peer-based, recovery oriented empowering services, and resources when people need them and how they need to receive them.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)3 organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick up large donations. TOPS OFFERS LOCAL MEETINGS
T.O.P.S. – Take Off Pounds Sensibly – is a self-accountability group meeting held every Monday. Weigh in is from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
