Chad J. Rahtz of La Crescenta is participating in the study abroad program at New York’s St. Lawrence University for the fall 2014 semester. Rahtz is a member of the Class of 2016 and is majoring in economics. He attended St. Francis High School.
He will take part in the Australia – James Cook University study abroad program.
More than 50% of St. Lawrence University students study off campus for a semester or longer at either one its international study abroad programs or programs located in the United States.

Several local residents made the academic deans’ list at Azusa Pacific University. These students are honored for a spring 2014 grade point average of 3.5 or better. They are joined by 1,743 students receiving the same honor.

Ryan Schloessmann of Glendale has been named to the dean’s list at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Schloessmann is the son of Michael Schloessmann and Melissa Vroman.
The dean’s list is compiled each summer and is drawn from the top 10% of the previous year’s first-year, sophomore, and junior classes. It is announced at the beginning of the academic year as part of the opening convocation festivities.

On Sept. 28, Army and Navy Academy held its annual sword ceremony, recognizing senior cadet leaders in their roles of leadership and influence.
The sword ceremony is held each year to acknowledge cadet leadership at the school. Cadets are selected to receive sabers after completion of the Officer Candidate Course (OCC), a six-week long course that tests the students on leadership, discipline, ability to lead drill, and other skills needed to succeed within the Corps of Cadets.
Successful completion of OCC is a significant accomplishment at Army and Navy Academy, and the sword ceremony is formal recognition of this achievement.
Recognized cadets include Ian Kim of Shadow Hills and Brandon Um of La Cañada.
Founded in 1910, the Army and Navy Academy is a private not-for-profit institution that provides an academically robust, character-based education for young men, grades 7 through 12.

Biola University named the following students, among 1,513, to its spring 2014 dean’s list for their academic excellence: Caleb Choi of La Cañada, Jayjeon Ghil, Joanne Shim and Sarah Yoon of La Crescenta and Eunice Pak and David Yi of Montrose.
Biola students are placed on the dean’s list to honor those with a grade point average of 3.6 or higher while enrolled in 12 or more credit units and whose cumulative grade point average is at least 3.2.

Kristy Koperski of La Crescenta achieved dean’s list at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for spring 2014. Dean’s list status is awarded to students who earned a scholastic average of 3.6 or better while carrying at least 12 hours of regularly graded courses.

Army and Navy Academy recognizes those students who have exhibited academic excellence during the first grading period of the 2014-15 school year. Those who have achieved a grade point average of 3.80 or higher have been named to the dean’s list.
This is an impressive accomplishment, especially considering the academy’s unique curriculum that includes Leadership Education Training (LET) in addition to the core subjects.

Lisa Kenigson of La Crescenta has been named to the chancellor’s list for term one of the 2014-15 academic year at Troy University in Troy, Alabama.
The chancellor’s list honors students who have earned a 4.0 grade point average for the previous academic period.

Ian Kim of Shadow Hills was presented the Army and Navy Academy Major Peterson Legion of Merit Award for his performance during the spring 2014 semester.
This award is presented to cadets who exhibit excellence in citizenship, leadership, and personal appearance. The cadet must be in a leadership position with the rank of Corporal or higher during the previous semester, must have maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and must have earned a citizenship grade of “excellent” for each grading period.
He also received the Dean Raymond Ede Superior Academic Achievement Award.

Pratt Institute welcomed an incoming class of 835 new students, selected from more than 7,300 applicants, for the fall 2014 semester. The newly enrolled students come from 48 states and 80 countries. These included Celeste Im and Hannah Suh of La Cañada and Eun Young Oh of La Crescenta.

Alison Roth, a native of La Cañada, is officially enrolled as a member of the University of Iowa, class of 2018. The undergraduate class is the largest (4,666 students) and most diverse first-year class in UI history and is academically accomplished.
Among the record-setting academic achievements of the first-year class includes having 523 Old Gold Scholarship recipients, compared to 398 in 2013.

The following area students received merit scholarships to attend Fort Lewis College for the fall 2014 semester. These merit scholarships are renewable for up to 120 credits if criteria are met. Fort Lewis College also offers several other scholarships, including grants, the Finish in Four! Scholarship, FLC Foundation scholarships, alumni scholarships, departmental scholarships, Native American scholarships and outside scholarships.
Catherine Adams of La Crescenta earned the Continuing Student Merit Scholarship. Adams’s major is English, writing option. Pamela Bogust of Sunland earned the Continuing Student Merit Scholarship. Bogust’s major is physics – engineering physics option. Lucas Rowton of La Cañada Flintridge earned the Continuing Student Merit Scholarship. Rowton’s major is exercise science – exercise specialist option and Maia Shields of La Crescenta earned the Continuing Student Merit Scholarship. Shields’s major is psychology.

Weston Foote of La Crescenta performed in the Cornell College Wind Ensemble concert on Nov. 7 in King Chapel.
The wind ensemble hosts about 55 students and performs both original wind band music and transcriptions of pieces for this specific instrumentation. This ensemble has performed works by Holst, Vaughan Williams, Dello Joio, Persichetti, and Rorem, as well as marches by composers such as Sousa, Alford and King.
The Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Martin Hearne, offer performance opportunities in vibrant, well-respected groups to all students by audition. Approximately 80% of members are non-music majors.
