Both local Y facilities will be open to the community on Saturday, Jan. 10 from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The community is invited to enjoy the facilities for the day with special demonstrations of programs including free group swim lessons from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for all kids ages 3 and older, gymnastics demonstrations, basketball shooting drills, adult group exercise master classes and much more! AAUW GLENDALE BRANCH JANUARY MEETING

The next meeting of the AAUW is on Saturday, Jan. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The speaker will be branch member and former mayor Eileen Givens, who will discuss her new book, “I Baked a Cake for Ike and Mamie!” It is an informal memoir of her grandparents, Douglas and Mabel McKay, who were part of President Dwight D. PROUTY OFFERS CONCERT

The Second Saturday Series presents organist Kristin Holton Prouty on Jan. 10 at
4 p.m. at Glendale City Seventh-day Adventist Church. Prouty is director of worship and music at Victory Lutheran Church, and has performed and competed throughout Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Mexico and the U.S.

MILLINERY DELIGHTS AND LIQUID FIRE AT BOLTON HALL

Little Landers Historical Society is hosting a new temporary exhibit at Bolton Hall Museum. “Millinery Delights” is a fun and colorful exhibit featuring a variety of head coverings and fashion accessories from the first half of the 20th century and more.

Millinery Delights will be available for viewing at Bolton Hall through April 2015.

NEON – Liquid Fire! explores the question of where the first neon sign was in America which may have been in downtown Los Angeles. On Jan. 10 at 1 p.m., Little Landers welcomes historians Dr. Dydia LeLyser and Paul Greenstein to speak about the history of neon signs. Their research into the history of neon signs has taken them to the archives of many government and educational institutions.

This program is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

SALON DE MUSIQUES FEATURES FRENCH MASTERS

The next presentation of Salon de Musiques is on Jan. 11 and features two French masters, Camille Saint-Saens and Leon Boellmann, including two U.S. premieres.

Introduced by musicologist Julius Reder Carlson, the concert will be performed by the Pacific trio of Roger Wilkie on violin, John Walz on cello, and Edith Orloff at the piano.

An informal Q&A with the artists will follow the performance and a gourmet buffet dinner provided by Patina with French champagne will be served.

Tickets are $39 for students, and $75 for general admission (includes dinner and drinks).

The performance takes place at 4 p.m. at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, fifth floor, 135 N. Grand Ave, Los Angeles.

LOVE TO SING? JOIN THE TOWNE SINGERS

The Towne Singers is a non-audition choir that is in particular need of male voices, but all are welcome to join this family of musicians. Rehearsals for the upcoming spring concert begin Monday, Jan. 12. The 2015 spring concert, “Broadway Bash” is on May 17. Rehearsals are held Mondays from 7:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Glendale.

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club will present a program by Fred Dong on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

MONTHLY MEETING OF GLENDALE QUILT GUILD

The Jan. 15 meeting of the Glendale
Quilt Guild features speaker Lujean Seagal. The topic is Beyond Boring Borders.

Her Beyond Boring Borders lecture will entice you to make an otherwise ordinary quilt look extraordinary. She uses simple techniques that quilters of all abilities can employ and she shows more than 30 quilts each with a different technique. There will not be a workshop the following Saturday.

The Glendale Quilt Guild meets the second Wednesday of each month at the First Congregational Church of Glendale, 2001 Cañada Blvd. at 6:30 p.m. for social and 7 p.m. meeting. The cost is $5 for visitors and is free for members.

Both Blews and Batinkoff are actors. The book deals with assisted suicide, specifically that of Blews’ wife who suffered from multiple sclerosis.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)3 organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick up large donations. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
