CV Alliance Teen Trials & Tribulations begins today, Thursday, Jan. 22 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the CV High School library with a free presentation for parents and students on teen anxiety and depression led by Lisa Vartanian, PhD/MFT.

Parent Sessions meet Tuesday nights from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. also in the library. The next session is on Jan. 27 and the topic is “Rehab & Relapse” with Ben Salazar, chair, GCC Alcohol/Drug Studies Program. His presentation coincides with National Drug Facts Awareness Week.

‘SHIELD AND SPEAR’ COMING TO BRAND LIBRARY
The Brand Associates’ Reel Art Series presents a public screening of “Shield and Spear,” a film by Petter Ringbom, today, Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale.

“Shield and Spear” explores the areas where art and politics intersect in South Africa and documents what it’s like to live and work as an artist in a new democracy. It explores a constellation of stories about art, music, identity, race, and freedom of expression in South Africa, 20 years into democracy.

Alysa Nahmias, one of the film’s producers, will moderate a discussion following the film.

BOOKSIGNINGS AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse is hosting a booksigning tonight, Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. Guy Blews will be signing copies of his book, “How Angels Die: A Confession/A Heartbreaking Tale of Unconditional Love.” He will be joined by Randall Batinkoff, director of the movie “37: A Final Promise,” which was based on the book. Both Blews and Batinkoff are actors. The book deals with assisted suicide, specifically that of Blews’ wife who suffered from multiple sclerosis.

‘UKULELE CABARET’ AT McGROARTY ARTS CENTER
On Friday, Jan. 23, McGroarty Arts Center presents its 4th Friday Concert Series for January, Ukulele Cabaret, featuring the Honolulu Avenue Strummers with special guests Brett Santucci and Just Pick Something. Kick back and start your weekend off right at the coolest house concert in town!

Ukulele Cabaret will explore the versatility of this charming instrument and challenge preconceptions. The Honolulu Avenue Strummers are a Montrose-based ukulele ensemble and have appeared in the Montrose Christmas Parade as well as in La Cañada’s Fiesta Days. They will be joined by the versatile duo Just Pick Something, and soloist Brett Santucci.

BOOK, MUSIC AND ART SALE AT BRAND LIBRARY
The Brand Associates and Brand Library book, music, and art sale continues through Saturday, Jan. 24 during the library’s open hours. The sale will take place at Brand Library & Art Center in the Skylight Gallery. Admission is free and complimentary parking is available in Brand Park adjacent to the library.

The sale will feature an extensive collection of arts-related books, CDs, vinyl records, periodicals, posters, graphics, and original art pieces and selected original serigraphs from the Brand Associates’ Robert Brown Collection. ‘LIBERAL VS. CONSERVATIVE’ AT DEMO CLUB
The Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club begins 2015 with a talk by anthropologist Claudia Strauss on “American Politics Beyond the Liberal-Conservative Divide.” The meeting will be Sunday, Jan. 25, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the home of Celina Lew and Ed Castro in La Cañada.

Dr. Strauss is a professor of anthropology at Pitzer College in Claremont and author of “Making Sense of Public Opinion: American Discourses about Immigration and Social Programs (2012).”

SCHULHOF TO SPEAK AT DESCANSO GARDENS
The Pacific Camellia Society kicks off a new season of meetings at Descanso Gardens with popular former Descanso Gardens Executive Director Richard Schulhof as the featured speaker. The meeting will be on Thursday evening, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited. There is no admission charge.

Schulhof will present a slide show about his search for wild camellias in China and Vietnam. Among other things, he is the former deputy director of Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum, and is currently the CEO of the L.A. County Arboretum.

Dr. Bradford King, editor of the American Camellia Society Journal and president of the Southern California Camellia Society, will speak at all of the society’s 2015 meetings. At this meeting, Dr. King, a retired USC psychologist, will pass along some of his wisdom about solving camellia problems in an easy-to-understand Power Point presentation.

FREE INCOME TAX PREPARATION
Beginning Feb. 4 and continuing through April 10, residents can receive free income tax preparation under the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program administered by AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, a tax-exempt charity of AARP. Membership in AARP is not required.

VALENTINE LUNCHEON WITH AWH
The Foothill Auxiliary of Ahead With Horses (AWH) will present its Annual Valentine Luncheon and Chinese Auction on Friday, Feb. 6, at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena. Last year’s event was a huge success with over $12,000 given to AWH to benefit children.

The next presentation of Salon de Musiques is on Sunday, Feb. 8 featuring Austrian composer Franz Schubert. Musicologist Julius Reder Carlson will introduce each performance. ‘OVER A HUNDRED YEARS
 OF HATS’
Little Landers Historical Society announces the next in its series of monthly programs of historical interest. “Over a Hundred Years of Hats” will take place at Bolton Hall on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m.

For centuries, hats have symbolized wealth, status, nationality, occupation and religion. Hats are artistic creations and milliners though the ages have been influenced by everything in their socio-economic environment.

Speaker Pamela Heiman is a historian, librarian and collector of vintage hats.  She will guide the audience through 100 years of hats using examples from her own collection to display changes in hat design and use.

This program is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)3 organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick up large donations.
