Potential future students of Clark Magnet High School visited with teachers and saw the classrooms during the school’s 12th annual expo and open house on Saturday.

The purpose of the event is to open the campus to the community and for parents to see if they want their kids to attend the school. Parents and students both were able to have an inside look at the campus and meet with the teachers personally.

“We’ve had lots of people come in who are interested and they ask intelligent questions,” said chemistry teacher Alex Blattner. “It’s a good chance to see what’s being offered here.”

The majority of the students who visited are eighth grade students who have to make a decision where to attend next year. There are also current students who visit to show their younger siblings the school.

Current Clark Magnet student Rouben Arabian said that what separates Clark Magnet from other schools is that there is an expectation that its students will act professionally and behave in a way any adult would. Arabian also said the school offers a lot of opportunities that many schools do not.

“Clark Magnet has a lot of things that you can’t get at any other schools,” said biology and AP biology teacher Virginia Benzer. “We have a block schedule which allows kids to take seven classes a semester and we have several opportunities for them to take different kinds of career-oriented technology classes during the high school day so that helps out as well.”

Clark Magnet is a school with a curriculum that focuses on science and technology. Acceptance to the school is determined by a lottery conducted by the Glendale Unified School District to determine qualified applicants. Students must be enrolled or eligible for enrollment in a Glendale district school. Applications submitted after Jan. 30 will not be considered for the lottery, but will be placed on a waiting list, if eligibility is met.

The school is located at 4747 New York Ave., La Crescenta.
