On Friday, Jan. 23, the Bears from Pack 360, Den 8, visited the offices of the Crescenta Valley Weekly. They came to learn how the newspaper is made. There were six boys visiting plus two brothers and two sisters. The scouts – Caden, 9, Elias, 8, Matthew, 8, Riley, 9, William, 8, and Zachary, 9 – attend local elementary schools including Columbus, Dunsmore, Monte Vista, Valley View, Mountain Avenue and Fremont. The brothers who came were Connor, 10, Alexander, 6; the sisters who joined the excursion were Leah, 6 and Jennifer, 15. Some of the parents came, too, with Den Leader Leslie Dickson and Cubmaster John Jucksch.
Among the things they learned about were the historical importance that newspapers have in a community. Publisher Robin Goldsworthy shared how she started the paper in 2009 just as the Station Fire was starting. She told them that the Crescenta Valley Weekly also publishes Discover, a magazine that is distributed once a year that highlights local points of interest and provides important information on the Crescenta Valley, and The Finest, a list of those chosen by the paper’s readers as The Finest in a variety of categories.
