Kyle Currie hit a lot of 3-pointers in the most recent Falcons basketball victory, this news courtesy of the sarcasm department of big surprises.

         Currie was cold early Tuesday night against Glendale, but warmed up in the second half as his Falcons came from behind for a 65-58 victory. With the win, CV climbed to 9-4 in the Pacific League, stabilizing their third-place standing behind Pasadena and Glendale.

         Currie, a slick shooting senior guard, doesn’t always have the biggest scoring games, but when  Crescenta Valley High School wins, there’s usually a bunch of crooked numbers next to his name in the box score.

         Currie scored 20 points, 17 of them in the second half. He made six 3-pointers and two free throws. Not only that, he added five rebounds and five assists. Center Chris Reik had 10 points and eight rebounds. Point guard Berj Krikorian scored 12 points and added five assists.

         Coach Shawn Zargarian acknowledged that Currie struggled early, and gave credit to Glendale’s defense.

         “But, on the flip side,” he said, “Kyle stayed within himself, trusted our guys and didn’t really force shots. And our guys did a great job of finding him in transition. We weren’t able to get him the ball enough in the [half-court offense], but in transition our guys made some great passes to him and he made some big-time shots.”

         It’s been a tough week for CV, but that’s nothing new in a season full of tough losses and hard-fought victories. The Falcons lost at Pasadena on Feb. 4 69-57. Forward Gabriel Ajemian scored 11 points in the second quarter and CV built a lead after a bad quarter, but no one wearing blue and white could stop the Bulldogs’ Tyreke Adams, who had 35 points.

         Last Friday CV got back on track with a close win at Hoover High School, and things started well enough for the team again on Tuesday. They led 16-11 after one quarter, but fell apart in the second. Glendale’s Alex Miralis scored 10 points in that frame and the Nitros led 27-23 at halftime.

         Currie hit a three off an out of bounds play to tie the game at 36 in the third, and it was a back and forth game until the final minute, when CV pulled away, when Reik and Arin Ovanessian each hit big 3-pointers (notice a trend here? The Falcons like to shoot from distance).

         The Falcons can actually claim second place in tonight’s regular season finale if they win and Glendale loses to Hoover. CV hosts Arcadia at 7 p.m. The Apaches have just one win in league, and six overall.

         “It’s scary because now it becomes a pride game,” Zargarian said of playing Arcadia. “Nothing to lose, a rivalry game. We just have to come out and play the right way.”

         The Falcons will send off their seniors before the game, as each senior and their family members will walk onto the court and be recognized for their time in the basketball program. Those players are Currie, Krikorian, John Park, Thulani Kachingwe and Jimmy Smiley.
