JLP TO HOST 2ND ANNUAL SIMPLY SPEAKING BENEFIT LUNCHEON

On Saturday, April 11, the Junior League of Pasadena, Inc. (JLP) will host its second annual benefit luncheon, Simply Speaking, at the University Club of Pasadena. This year’s guest speaker is Jane Olson, an inspiring humanitarian and Pasadena area local.

Olson has devoted her life to international justice and humanitarian work and has chaired the International Board of Human Rights Watch and the Landmine Survivors Network board.

The event will feature a seated lunch and silent auction. In addition, the 2015 recipient of the Nancy Reed Payne Achievement Award will be announced acknowledging a sustaining member for her exceptional contribution and years of dedication to the Junior League and to her community. All funds raised through the event will directly benefit the Junior League of Pasadena and its community projects.

‘BALLETS RUSSES’ AT BRAND LIBRARY

The Brand Associates and Glendale Library, Arts, and Culture present “Ballets Russes,” an award winning film by Dan Geller and Dayne Goldfine. The screening will take place on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at Brand Library & Art Center (Recital Hall) in Glendale. Admission is free and open to the public. Complimentary parking is available in Brand Park adjacent to the library and an accessible entrance and parking is available on the east side of the building.

“Ballets Russes” (2005) is a documentary that captures the charismatic personalities of the revolutionary 20th century dance company, “Ballets Russes.” The company, composed of Russian refugees, evolved into two rival dance companies that fought the infamous “ballet battles” that consumed London society prior to World War II. The film includes stunning archival footage and interviews with its glamorous stars, prominently featuring the legendary Irina Baronova, one of the “baby ballerinas” who was George Balanchine’s protégé.

Special guest speaker is Victoria Tennant, an Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actress. Tennant is the daughter of “Ballets Russes” star Irina Baronova and she has written a compelling book about her mother, “Irina Baronova and the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo.” The book is an intimate recollection including rare photographs, letters, and interviews capturing Baronova’s dramatic life. A book sale and signing with Tennant will follow the screening.

CALTECH-OCCIDENTAL CONCERT BAND PRESENTS WINTER CONCERT

The Caltech-Occidental concert band, directed by William Bing, will present its annual winter concert on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Thorne Hall at Occidental College. Featured music will be by P.D.Q. Bach, Edward Elgar, Jamie Rankin, Ryan George, Rolf Wilhelm among others. There will also be presentations by the Caltech clarinet choir, the Caltech percussion ensemble, the Caltech flute choir, and the Caltech trombone choir. RAPP – Read And Practice Peacemaking is presenting “Inequality for All” on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church.

‘ALICE THROUGH THE WORMHOLE’ AT CALTECH THEATRE

Theater Arts Caltech presents Caltech Theater Lab’s original and world premiere production of “Alice Through the Wormhole” running from Feb. 20 through March 1.   This is a full-length original musical with book, music and lyrics by Brenda Varda and the Caltech community, and directed by Caltech’s Brian Brophy.

In this original adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” and “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” Alice is a new grad genius in spintronics with a passion for marionetting. On a tour of a major science institute, Tellkech, a manic PhD candidate, WB, drags her down a wormhole to the underbelly of the campus. Once she enters into this world, all logic and reality lose ground as she gets caught in the battle between the Queen of Funding and the Dark Prince of Future Science. Along the way she battles to pursue the cutting edge research she passionately believes in, while sustaining her creative imagination and emotional balance.

Our Alice fights against all odds, from a rap-singing dissertation by a Humpty Dump professor to appearances from the dead gods of science, from Soylent Green drinking grad students to an enigmatic beat poet Cheshire chimp lab assistant, Tweedles, and the search for graphene.

ALMA QUARTET AT BRAND LIBRARY

KEN OSMOND AT GLENDALE CENTRAL LIBRARY

Ken Osmond discusses his new book “Eddie: The Life and Times of America’s Preeminent Bad Boy” with coauthor Chris Lynch on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Glendale Central Library.

Osmond is a former dancer, model and actor best known for playing the overly effusive and unctuous character Eddie Haskell from the TV show, “Leave it to Beaver.” A former veteran, Osmond spends his time currently supporting U.S. military and volunteering for the American Legion.

Co-author Lynch is a Los Angeles native who has written for numerous local and national publications. He is the author of the “One Eyed Jack” series of crime novels about a professional blackmailer who operates in and around the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Lynch will return to the Central Library on March 7 with his popular workshop on self-publishing.

The Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club will feature Dr. Amanda Hollis-Brusky from Pomona College on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lanterman House in La Cañada.

Co-leading the walk will be Tim Martinez, outreach coordinator for the Arroyo Seco Foundation and board member of the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy. Sample chia seeds, elderberries and other native foods as participants discuss the various medicinal, spiritual and practical uses of native plants as they have been used in Southern California for thousands of years. Native plants will be available for purchase after the tour.

‘MASTERS REDISCOVERED’ PRESENTED BY SALON DE MUSIQUES

The next presentation of Salon de Musiques is on March 8 featuring genius Austrian composer Franz Schubert. Introduced by musicologist Julius Reder Carlson, the concert will be performed by world renowned artists consisting of Martin Chalifour and Ambroise Aubrun on violins, Carrie Dennis on viola, Jacob Braun on cello and Kevin Fitz-Gerald at the piano. FIRES, FLOODS & FOSSILS

Little Landers announces the next in its series of monthly programs of historical interest. Local mountains have recently yielded up fossils from the distant past following the 2009 Stations Fire and subsequent flooding. Speaker Charly Shelton, a geologist associated with Cal State L.A. and writer and editor of CV Weekly and True Believer, will tell program attendees about his research and will present maps, pictures and fossils uncovered in area mountains.

This program is on Saturday, March 14 at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall in Tujunga. The program is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

Looking ahead to April, the historical society is hosting Blazing Star Bazaar Treasures & Plant Sale, the annual rummage and plant sales. Both events are fundraisers for Little Landers and Bolton Hall and will be held at Bolton Hall on April 25 starting at 9 a.m.

Donations of new, gently used, antique, retro, vintage and collectible items may be brought to Bolton Hall during public hours any Tuesday or Sunday afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. or on Friday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

PLAN NOW FOR DAY AT THE RACES

The Crescenta Valley Sheriff Support Group, the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Montrose Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce have teamed up for the 7th Annual Crescenta Valley Day at the Races. The event will take place at the Santa Anita Race Track on Sunday, March 15.

The cost to attend is $25 for adults (18 and over) and $15 for attendees who are 17 years and under. Once again, the group has reserved the Top of the Stretch on the grandstand side, which is a prime viewing area. Plus, each attendee will enjoy nine exciting Thoroughbred races, parking, an official race program, barbecue lunch, soft drinks and “expert” handicapping advice from Rick Dinger.

The barbecue lunch will again be donated by Schreiner’s Fine Sausages. There will also be a raffle and silent auction so everyone will have the opportunity to leave a winner. Proceeds from this event benefit the CV Sheriff Support Group and both local chambers.

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)3 organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick up large donations. TOPS OFFERS LOCAL MEETINGS

T.O.P.S. – Take Off Pounds Sensibly – is a self-accountability group meeting held every Monday. Weigh in is from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
