GUSD Candidates Debate

By Mary O’KEEFE

Tonight at 7 p.m. the Crescenta Valley Town Council will host a debate with Glendale Unified School District school board candidates.

The format will allow the candidates to respond to each other on the issues. A new feature will allow those who cannot make it to the meeting to view the debate live online by going to http://www.electromotive.co/electrolive.

For the past month the CVTC has been asking the public to send questions that will be asked of the candidates during the debate. Community members can send their questions to contact@thecvcouncil.com.

Members of the Crescenta Valley Youth Town Council and Prom Plus Club will be at the meeting to register anyone who is qualified to vote in the upcoming April 7 election but has yet to register or had a change of address since the last election. A student representative has been trained by the Los Angeles County Registrar’s office.

Jessy Shelton, a member of both the CVYTC and Prom Plus Club, was part of the register training.

“I think it is important to register so [the voter] can be part of the voting process and to have a say in what’s happening,” she said.

This election is especially important because it affects kids directly, she added.

“They [school board] make decisions on policies like Common Core and other things that affect kids,” she said. “And even if you are out of high school your decision will make a difference to your sister or brother who is still in school.”

The CVTC is also looking to raise some funds for their events and scholarship program through a “beautiful fundraiser.”

CVTC has about 280 trees of 25 varieties that they are selling. Each 15-gallon tree is $10. Orders must be placed no later than March 25. Order and pick-up details can be found on the CVTC website under “Earth Day Tree Order” or use the linkhttp://thecvcouncil.com/earth-day-trees.
