My husband Scott and I watched, “Out of Reach,” the documentary we showed on Tuesday night about teens abusing pills. I asked how he would describe it and he said, “Behind-the-scenes look” and he’s right! The filmmaker didn’t know what was going on in his own school so he made a movie for adults equally out of the loop. If you missed it and want to see it, give CV Alliance a call.
Speaking of teens, CV Youth Alliance (CVYA) exercises on Thursday nights at the Ark, 4409 La Crescenta. It’s a free “boot camp” regime. But, not tonight because it’s “Distracted Driving and DUI” at 7 p.m. in the CV High library for parents and kids with CHP Officer Bejar. In addition to meeting in room 7106 of CV High School during lunch on the first and third Mondays, our CVYA is putting together an exhibit of photographs showing life in CV from a teen’s perspective called UR Voice (your voice). We saw some of the photos at the partners meeting and we all were impressed by this talented group. This program is underwritten by the Mary Pinola/CV Chamber Education Fund. More information about CV Youth Alliance events and activities is coming soon.
“Why” questions make adolescents defensive, so we ask non-threatening “how” and “what” questions. During a mentoring webinar, an expert suggested starting “how” and “what” questions with “I was wondering…” It’s fact-finding Columbo style!
Communication isn’t a spectator sport and while we transmit to you, we’d love to hear more from you. You visit our website for activities and resources. You open our email blasts. We’d appreciate it if more of you followed us on Facebook and Twitter because we post all kinds of things designed to interest you and stimulate comments. Issue-specific blogs are in the works. We will add a walk around the CV High track at night this summer for those of you who like face-to-face interactions.
Talk! We’ll listen.
