The past week warmed up more than I expected, with highs in the 80s. Then at the beginning of this week cooler, cloudy weather moved in. Any chance of rain was erased by north winds blowing through. Left behind are clear skies scattered with cumulus clouds. This weekend is actually predicted to be in the mid 80s.  Notice anything different, so far, this month?  No fog!
May and June are usually dominated by a heavy marine layer. Meteorologists, including the National Weather Service, think the lingering effects of El Nino might be the reason for the more than average share of blue skies. Past El Nino events have proven this to be true. During an El Nino year low pressure troughs move further south bringing more rain and cold air. This prevents the formation of the  marine layer along the Southern California coast. Ironically, although there may be less fog and low clouds, there could be more rain. So, don’t pack away that umbrella yet!
As I drove east on the 210 Freeway today and into the Crescenta Valley (I love the view looking up at our mountains) I noticed green grass has grown all  the way to the top of Mt. Lukens. Let’s hope for one more rain shower before summer!
