4700 block of  Hampton Road in La Cañada, a resident reported that when she returned home from a vacation she discovered her vehicle, a 2009 Lincoln, was stolen and a 1989 blue Ford pick-up was in her driveway instead. She told deputies that she had a spare key to the vehicle in her home and the only one with access to her residence was a 37-year-old New-hall woman she had hired as a dog sitter. The resident had employed the Newhall woman since 2005.  She had attempted to contact the dog walker on her cellphone but the phone had been disconnected. She reportedly told deputies she had left messages on the woman’s business line but had not heard back. This was unusual for the woman to not return calls. The deputies found the pick-up truck belonged to a resident in Los Angeles. They contacted the L.A. Police Department for assistance. The LAPD contacted the truck owner and was told he had lent the truck to the dog sitter. A short while after this conversation the dog sitter contacted the resident. She told her she had run out of gas and was using the homeowner’s vehicle. By the time she arrived at the residence she had been contacted by the deputies and was tearful. Deputies found her driver’s license had been suspended. In a bag they found in the suspect’s possession they allegedly discovered five balloons of heroin and six hypodermic needles and a plastic spoon wrapped in aluminum foil commonly used by heroin users. The dog sitter reportedly told deputies she had started using heroin about three months prior to help deal with shoulder pain. Her doctor would no longer prescribe medication for her. The suspect was arrested for taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Narcotics detectives are currently investigating the source of the heroin. The incident occurred in the evening hours.

400 block of Starlight Crest in La Cañada, a 26-year-old Tujunga man was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine after deputies stopped him. According to the sheriff’s report, a call came into the station regarding a suspicious person in a vehicle. When deputies arrived they discovered the Tujunga man “passed out” and unresponsive.  Deputies also allegedly observed a glass pipe commonly used in with methamphetamine in the man’s hand. After several “verbal commands” the man woke up and seemed disoriented. The man said he had run out of gas while driving around and got lost. He decided to park the car until he could figure out his way home. During the investigation deputies discovered another pipe similar to the one the man had in his hand earlier. Both pipes appeared to have a substantial amount of unburnt residue, according to the report. As the investigation continued deputies allegedly discovered numerous items in the man’s vehicle including power tools, car stereos and an assortment of sunglasses. He told deputies the car belonged to a friend and that the items in the vehicle were gifts. Deputies were unable to contact the vehicle’s owner but did note the stereos appeared to have the electric wires cut on the back of each unit.   The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a narcotic and reasonable cause of receiving stolen property at 3:38 p.m.
