By Council President Cheryl Davis
Have you ever wondered who you should contact with questions and concerns? If you live in the unincorporated areas of La Crescenta or Montrose, the answer to this question can be pretty elusive.
The unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County are not part of any city and are governed by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, which acts as your “city council” and establishes policies and regulations that affect you and your neighborhood. Locally, the purpose of the Crescenta Valley Town Council (CVTC) is to serve as an advisory body to our county supervisor, Michael D. Antonovich. The CVTC provides a monthly forum/meeting to discuss issues of concern to the residents and businesses of unincorporated Montrose and La Crescenta.
Registered voters who have lived in these unincorporated areas for at least one year are eligible to be candidates for the Town Council and registered voters living in these areas are eligible to vote in the CVTC election each November. It is important to remember that our Council members are volunteers and the Council receives no public funding. The Council is always grateful for donations and participation in monthly silent auctions as any and all operating expenses are paid by contributions and fundraising efforts, which also fund activities including annual scholarships to high school seniors.
The Town Council and the Drug and Alcohol Prevention Coalition are co-sponsoring “Discover Foothill” this Saturday, May 15 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Starting at the La Crescenta Library, we will be utilizing the new bike lanes along Foothill Boulevard. There will be free bike safety checks and bike rides led by the L.A. Bike Coalition to teach riders the rules of the road. The CHP will help with bike lane safety questions. Foothill merchants will welcome you along the way and invite you to take a break and visit. Don’t miss the art exhibit at St. Luke’s Church or the Healthy Activities booth at the library where you will find information about a variety of fun summer programs for your children.
If you have not recently attended a CVTC meeting, please join us Thursday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the La Crescenta Library Community Room. The Council will be awarding annual scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Residents will hear from first responders and featured guest speakers. You are all encouraged to speak about issues or concerns and make community announcements.
