On Saturday, the Falcons attended the first Backwards Invitational track and field meet held at the new Burroughs Memorial Stadium. Sponsored by Coach Darin Wolf of Burbank, this invitational was the first of its kind. Rather than following the traditional order of events, the meet featured a schedule that started and finished in reverse order.

The meet started with the 4×400 relay, (the 1600 relay) which was won by Canyon High School with a time of 4.04.28.

Next was the 3200m race. Typically the 3200m runners are either running late in the evening or in the heat of the late afternoon. On Saturday, these runners were second on the list. Taking the field with Crescenta Valley and Canyon were the Burroughs state champion cross-country runners. Burroughs’ leader Garrett Boulais won the 3200m in 9:31.42 outdistancing Canyon’s Caleb McClain who claimed second (9:37.34) and Burroughs’ Andrew McClain who took third. CV runners Silas FitzGerald grabbed fourth (9:49.31) and Colin FitzGerald took seventh (9:54.28).

Emmie Walker won the high jump clearing 5-2. Canyon jumper Dana Bowers cleared the same height, but had more misses and placed second. Falcon John Lapides fell off his best jump and took second place clearing 5-6. CV’s Clair Schlueter placed third in the long jump (16-5) and second in the triple jump (32-04). Falcon Hannah Sy took fourth in the girls’ varsity 100m with a time of 13.20 and Rebecca Mencia ran the 3200 in 12:06.28 to place ninth.

In preparation for the Pacific League conference prelims on Friday, Coach Mark Evans decided to rest a few key athletes. Notable were the absences of CV’s key varsity members including Megan Melnyk, Alisa Shinn, Arthur Akopyan and Kyle Dickinson among others.

Many of the young soph/frosh CV athletes also performed well on Saturday. Clair Codding won the high jump clearing 4-8 and showing great promise with her almost misses at 5-0. Jessy Shelton won the 100m (13.32) and placed third in the 200m (27.98). Robert McNelis ran 4:44 in the 1600 and took fifth.

“Burbank meet was very good for us,” said Coach Evans. “We had some very good performances … this was a good tune-up for the league meet.”
