WOMEN ARTISTS LAUNCH WILDERNESS CONVERSATION
The Eco-Art Collective of the Southern California Women’s Caucus for Art (SCWCA) presents Wilderness Mind: Activating Wonder, a provocative multi-generational exhibition that opened at Modest Fly Studio Art Gallery on May 2. Works by 16 participating artists will be on display. A community conversation moderated by artist Suvan Geer with area activists will accompany the closing of the exhibition on Sunday, May 17, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

It is curated by Marie Cenkner and deals with conceptual and existential definitions of the idea of ‘wilderness.’ Cenkner is a curator, photographer and animator with an MFA from the University of Illinois, Champaign.

COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE
The Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization’s U.S. headquarters are opening new offices in the Montrose/Glendale community. CALTECH ANNOUNCES PERFORMANCES
Caltech-Occidental symphony and Caltech chamber singers present their spring concert on Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9 in the Ramo Auditorium on the Caltech campus at 8 p.m.

Caltech Performing and Visual Arts will present a spring chamber music series in Dabney Lounge on the Caltech campus. The first concert will be the Mother’s Day concert on Sunday, May 10 at 3:30 p.m. Enjoy music of Romantic masters Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff performed by outstanding Caltech student musicians.

The second and final concert in the series is the Annual Chamber Music Marathon on Sunday, May 17 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Caltech students present music for every taste – Vivaldi, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Schumann, a complete performance of “Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” by Piazzolla, and much more!

Audience members may drop in at any time and stay as long they wish.

The Caltech bands will present their 35th Annual Bandorama on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 at 8 p.m. in Ramo Auditorium on the Caltech campus. The concert band will feature guest conductors Paul Asimow and Les Deutsch. The program will include music by Holst, Deutsch and Dvorak.

The Caltech jazz band, directed by Barb Catlin, will feature the music of west coast composers Bill Holman, Steve Huffsteter, Gordon Goodwin and others. Seniors Jonathan Liu and Daniel DeFelippis will be featured on trumpet and piano.

‘OUR HILLS AND HOLLYWOOD’
Little Landers announces the May opening of a new temporary exhibit. The “Our Hills and Hollywood” exhibit celebrates the importance of our community in providing film sites for hundreds of feature films, TV movies, TV series and commercials since the early 1900s.

The LLHS May 9 program, also titled “Our Hills and Hollywood,” will provide a look at many of these films and a comparison to what the film locations look like now. Presenter for this program is LLHS member and history buff Craig Durst. A Sunland-Tujunga resident, Durst is a graduate of the Institute of Audio Video Engineering and owner of Creative Avenue, a TV production company and a founder of JLTV, a national TV network. Among his many talents, Durst is also an expert still shot photographer and has produced a series of Then and Now photos based on historical photos from the Little Landers’ archives.

This program is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

It takes place at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall Museum, 10110 Commerce Ave., Tujunga. Parking is available a few doors uphill at the Elks Lodge.

BECK’S ‘CANYON LANDS’ AT SIERRA CLUB
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group will present Michael Beck’s “Canyon Lands: Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon,” on Tuesday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library. Beck has presented this program to the group before, always showing new interesting views and giving an informative narrative about this magnificent area.

GLENDALE QUILT GUILD
On Wednesday, May 13, the featured speaker of the Glendale Quilt Guild is Grace J. Errea. She is a self-taught artist and her work illustrates, and has been recognized for, exceptional primary use of value and secondary use of color. Her focus on value makes it easy for her and her students to create inspiring botanicals, landscape scenes and portraits, in any color.

There will be a workshop the following Saturday featuring her technique for heat-set machine applique.

The Glendale Quilt Guild meets the second Wednesday of each month at the First Congregational Church of Glendale, 2001 Cañada Blvd, Glendale at 6 p.m. for social and 6:30 p.m. meeting. The cost is $5 for visitors and is free for members.

Joseph Stoddard, watercolorist, teacher, designer and author will demonstrate a watercolor painting. A local man with a love of the Pasadena area and indeed of Southern California, his desire is that people have an emotional response to his paintings and drawings.

GLENDALE POLICE AWARDS LUNCHEON
The 20th Annual Glendale Police Awards Luncheon is on May 14 at the Glendale Hilton Hotel from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The luncheon will highlight the successes that the police department has seen in the past year. In addition the Officer of the Year, the Civilian Employee of the Year, and the Volunteer of the Year will be announced. Various other awards will also be announced.

Individual tickets for the luncheon are $85. There are also sponsorship opportunities such as presenting sponsor, as well as gold, silver, and bronze sponsorships. The opportunity to sponsor one officer to attend costs only $50, and two for $95.

AMERICAN LEGION HOSTING CAR SHOW
On Saturday, May 16 the American Legion Post 288 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1614 will host and sponsor an automobile show at Crescenta Valley Park. The show is from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. with the net proceeds to go to military and children’s charities.

The show will feature classic automobiles, hot rods and military vehicles.  Admission to the event by the general public is free. Auto show participants may pre-register their auto entries for $25 or register their cars on the day of the show for $30.  Trophies and dash plaques will be awarded.

In addition to the automobile and vehicle displays, there will be fire, police and search and rescue personnel and vehicles. There will be a DJ with “old time rock ‘n roll” as well as food trucks and vendors. A Kid’s Clinic will be held by Home Depot with “hands-on” tool demonstrations by Rigid, Milwaukee, Ryobi and other manufacturers.  There will be free coffee and donuts for all veterans.

Special guest speaker will be Capt. Gerald L. Peterson, U.S. Navy, Retired.

SALON DE MUSIQUES MAY PROGRAM
The next presentation of Salon de Musiques is on May 17 and celebrates two genius Russian composers: Sergei Rachmaninoff and Igor Stravinsky. The performance will be introduced by musicologist Julius Reder Carlson. The recital for cello and piano will be performed by two world-renowned artists: John Walz, principal cellist of the Los Angeles Opera, and Steven Vanhauwaert, pianist.

An informal Q&A with the artists will follow the performance and a gourmet buffet dinner provided by Patina with French champagne will be served.

Tickets are $39 for students, and $75 general admission that include dinner and drinks.

The performance takes place at 4 p.m. at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, fifth floor, 135 N. Grand Ave, Los Angeles.

CEC ONLINE FUNDRAISER
The Child Educational Center (CEC) is having its “1000 Suns” online auction fundraiser starting on May 29 at 8 a.m. The online auction fundraiser features several unique items including family and child-centered services, gifts, and vacation getaways that will be auctioned to raise money for the non-profit organization. The cocktail party will be held at a private residence in La Cañada Flintridge, and tickets will go on sale in mid-May.

NAWIC SGV ANNOUNCES MAGIC SUMMER CAMP
San Gabriel Valley chapter of National Assn. of Women in Construction is sponsoring MAGIC (Mentor A Girl In Construction) Camp. The camp provides a supportive and nurturing environment for high school girls (ninth through 12th grade) to explore and develop basic skills in the areas of carpentry, electrical and plumbing.

This free event helps girls develop a safety first attitude and builds self-confidence and self esteem for girls who tackle challenging projects, both individually and as a work team. It takes place at Pasadena City College Campus June 22-26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Lunch and snacks included. All registrations must be received by June 1.

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)3 organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick up large donations. BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The CrescentaCañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
