For the first time since 2011, the Crescenta Valley High baseball team will have to settle for second best in the Pacific League. By virtue of the Burroughs Indians’ win over Arcadia on Tuesday, the Falcons were denied a shot to tie Burroughs for the title heading into Friday night’s matchup with Arcadia.

While Burroughs has won league (12-1 record heading into the season finale), the Falcons (20-5, 10-3 in league) are simply trying to get on the right track before the CIF Division II playoffs begin next week.

Before beating Burbank last week and Muir on Tuesday, CV had dropped two games in a row, essentially putting them out of contention for a league title.

Burroughs earned a season sweep over the Falcons on May 1 with a 4-3 win, and on May 5 Glendale capped a come-from-behind 5-4 win when two Falcon outfielders misplayed a ball, which allowed the Nitro’s Orlando Diez to score all the way from first base for the winning run. The hit came off of pitcher Brain Gadsby, who had come on in relief.

Three days later, the Falcons were back on track. Gadsby got the start on the mound and threw a shutout, allowing only three hits against Burbank in a 2-0 win at Stengel Field.

On Tuesday night, the Falcons dispatched Muir 11-1. They travel to Arcadia on Friday the season finale at 7 p.m. CV beat Arcadia 9-0 on April 24. Two years ago at the Apaches’ field, Ted Boeke hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh inning, which led to a 5-4 win and clinched the Pacific League championship.

CIF Division II playoff pairings will be released on Monday at 9 a.m.
