Memorial Day Service Monday – Bring Flowers
Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.
~ John F. Kennedy
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. What history tells us though is a much more poignant story of love and loss covered in flowers.
Those who began leaving the flowers on the graves were the women and children that were left behind. What they lovingly did to remember their loved ones also reminded those around them of the sacrifice these men made for our freedom.
I would personally like to invite you to join us this Monday for our annual Memorial Day Service at 8 a.m. and to bring flowers in memory of those who gave their lives. Your small act of kindness may seem so simple to you but will bring great joy to those who remain. Vietnam War Memorial is located on the northwest corner of Ocean View and Honolulu Avenue.
In spite of the rain that tried to dampen our spirits and stop our 19th Annual Golf Classic and Scholarship Fundraiser, we ended up having a very successful tournament. Thank you to everyone who willingly played the entire tournament in the rain! Everyone that I talked to on the course said that they had a really fun time and would do it again! We wouldn’t have had a tournament without all of the golfers that showed up to play, so once again thank you.
I also want to say thank you to all the businesses that sponsored our event and truly added to the success of it. Thank you to Jane Kane from Podley Properties for sponsoring the golf balls, Bea Blessley from Jenkins Property Management for sponsoring the beer tickets and to our sponsors Andy’s Transfer and Storage, CVI Insurance, Jill Suarez of Dilbeck Realtors, Rob Tyler of JP Weaver, Source One Financial, J’s Maintenance, Great American Financial, L.A. County Supervisor Michael Antonovich and Montrose Travel for sponsoring our hole-in-one. Thank you Giuseppe’s, ETC Gourmet Kitchen, Gio’s Baguettes & More, El Charro, Sake Sushi, Big Mama’s and Papa’s Pizza, Schreiner’s Fine Sausages and Thee Elbow Room for generously donating all the wonderful food we enjoyed at our golf classic and scholarship fundraiser last Thursday. We had pizza from Giuseppe’s and Mama’s and Papa’s Pizza, brats from Schreiner’s, fudge brownies from ETC, sandwiches from Gio’s, enchiladas from El Charro, pork and sausage sliders from Thee Elbow Room, and a huge platter of sushi from Sake. It really was a feast and we are very grateful for all the donations we received! Go to our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/montrosechamber to see all great pictures of the food and the tournament. See you all next year!
