Since it was founded in 1972, the Gordon Stuart College Scholarship Endowment Fund has awarded over $400,000 in scholarships to former members of the Junior All-American football league program upon graduation from high school. The La Cañada Gladiators have been a proud member of Junior All-American since 1972.

This year, the awards presentation occurred on May 9 at the Baldwin Park Community Center in Baldwin Park. Four former Gladiators were among the scholarship recipients.

 

 

Clark’s Ansell Takes Top Honors

Mark Ansell, a senior at Clark Magnet High School, took top honors in the Elks National Scholarship program winning $50,000. There were over 500 finalists nationwide. Additionally, student board member Mary Agajanian from Clark Magnet ranked No. 4 in the contest and won $23,100.

According to Jack Wright from the Elks Lodge, $97,100 in scholarships have been awarded to students at Clark, Crescenta Valley, Hoover and Glendale High Schools.

Three high school graduates were awarded Sambar Scholarships at the Community Foundation of The Verdugos’ annual scholarship program on May 16 at the Pickwick Gardens. Receiving scholarships were Mark Ansell of Clark Magnet High School, and Blanca Garcia-Silva and Sarah Gonzales from Glendale High School.

The Sambar Scholarship Endowment was founded by Chakib “Chuck” Sambar, former teacher, administrator and member of the Glendale Board of Education, and his late wife Lois, a former teacher and principal in Glendale.

 

Montrose LC Kiwanis Club

The Montrose-La Crescenta Kiwanis Club scholarship tea was held on the afternoon of May 2 at the American Legion Hall on La Crescenta Avenue.

Scholarships were given to nine Crescenta Valley High School students and one Clark Magnet High School student.

Crescenta Valley recipients were Silag Fitzgerald, Liam Huber, Jacob Poole, Sean Gedorio, Allison Zadravecz, Justin Wright, Gabriel Hoffman, Lauren Harvey and Brandon Loder. From Clark Magnet, Patelle Jivalagian received a scholarship.

Zadravecz was also the recipient of the Alvena & Leslie W. Dobbings Memorial Scholarship that is sponsored by the Dobbings family through the Montrose-La Crescenta Kiwanis Club.

The Montrose-La Crescenta Kiwanis Club has been giving scholarships to local students for over 20 years. This year the total amount of scholarships given was $6,650.

The Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce awarded five $500 scholarships at its annual distribution held on May 22.

 

Patrons Club

The Patrons Club of Glendale Community College held a luncheon for its scholarship recipients on May 21 at the First Congregational Church of Glendale, hosted by the Culinary Arts Department.

This year, the Patrons Club awarded 31 scholarships and numerous grants-in-aid to deserving students, with a total amount of $22,700 distributed. Funds for these scholarships are generated from the yearly fashion show and silent auction, which this year will be held on Nov. 6 at the Castaway Restaurant in Burbank.

This year’s recipients, who all plan to transfer to four-year universities, are Anush Kadoyan, Nina Kanga, Alfonso Zamarripa, Anna Aleksanyan, Brittany Kelley, Sheila Araji, Edwin DerSookiassian, Sophie Mirzaian, Reef Oldberg, Marina Alzayat, Samantha Pyros, Dallar Babayan Aghan, Anita Chirinian, Ani Davtian, Addison Wightman Jr., Saro Babikian, Michelle Martinez, Emma Macias, Dikran Matevosyan, Jacob Berumen, Sung Hoon Kim, Zepur Avanesyans, Jenna DeKeater, Pegah Mirshaidi, Ashley Samaniego, Serine Torosian, Mary Herman and Elsie Mejia.

The Patrons Club Scholarship Committee members are Chairperson Pat Beggs, Carolyn Payne, Betty Musacco, Susan Cisco, Margaret Dickson and Karen Wharton.

 

 

Panhellenic

The Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic presented two Mary Ellen Gilstrap Memorial Scholarship awards this year. One recipient was Kaylee Pomeroy who graduated from Crescenta Valley High School. Pomeroy will be attending the University of Puget Sound in the fall, majoring in molecular and cellular biology/neuroscience with plans to attend medical school. The second recipient was Ani Sarkissian, a graduate of La Cañada High School who will be at Cal State San Luis Obispo majoring in civil engineering.

The 2015 College Sorority Member Scholarship recipients include Ari Sadanaga from Burbank, Chelsea Johnson of La Cañada Flintridge, Isabel Hodgson from Glendale and Marisa Gonzales from Montrose.

The 2015 High School Scholarship recipients who graduated from La Cañada High School include Sawa Keymeulen, Nicole Stevens, Catharine Cea, Erika Weiler and Sophia Lamb.

High School Scholarship recipients from Glendale include Clark Magnet High School student Leona Abrahamian and Olivia Homan from Maranatha High School student.

High School Scholarship recipients from Burbank High School include Angel Iwouma, Mindy Kim, Rachel Trujillo and Sharmagh Aghabeigi. Also receiving a High School Scholarship was Jordan Balla, a student at Village Christian who resides in Tujunga.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of

Forty-nine of Los Angeles County’s brightest high school seniors have been awarded college scholarships from Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) of Southern California, to help reduce the financial burden of college tuition, fees and other educational expenses. In total, the Chapter awarded $362,000 in scholarship funds to 115 exceptional high school seniors. Among the recipients were Hanna Jeon of Village Christian High School in Tujunga and Erica Son of Crescenta Valley High School in La Crescenta.

Students were recently honored at an awards luncheon hosted by the McDonald’s Operators’ Association of Southern California, which took place at the iconic Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles.

 

La Crescenta Woman’s Club

On May 8 the La Crescenta Woman’s Club presented their scholarships to seven high school seniors. This year’s recipients were Odalys Mendoza from Glendale High School, Jose Ruiz Garcia from Glendale High School, Alexandria Chwieut (who also received a scholarship check from the San Gabriel Valley District of Woman’s Clubs) from Crescenta Valley High School, Deborah Rheem (who also received a scholarship check from the San Gabriel Valley District of Woman’s Clubs) from Crescenta Valley High School, Makayla Mathew from Crescenta Valley High School, Justin Wright from Crescenta Valley High School and Soli Jones from Crescenta Valley High School who received the Roberta Kurtz Scholarship for the Arts and also the San Gabriel Valley Woman’s Club District Music Contest.
