In June at the monthly veterans’ breakfast at American Legion Post 288 and VFW Post 1614, Richard L. “Barney” St. Marie was recognized with the presentation of a copy of the posting on the Registry Of Remembrances on the national World War II memorial website. The presentation was made by recently installed American Legion Post Commander Gerry Collins.
St. Marie enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 21, 1944 in Red Lakes Falls, Minnesota at the age of 17. He received basic training at the Great Lakes Navel Training Station, Illinois and in Gulfport, Mississippi as a radio operator. St. Marie was eventually shipped to Japan and served onboard the USS Carmick (DMS-33), a destroyer/minesweeper, where he served as a personnel man 3rd class. He remained onboard the Carmick until the end of WWII and also during the Korean Conflict. St. Marie left the Carmick and the Navy in August 1952 to settle in San Diego. He currently resides in La Crescenta.
