Was there a bigger surprise than the Crescenta Valley High boys’ swim team this year?
Crescenta Valley shocked the area when the CV boys’ swim team earned second place overall in the CIF Southern Section Division II Finals at Belmont Plaza Pool on May 15, surpassing local rival and four-time reigning CIF champ La Ca-ada.
Oaks Christian earned first place (with an incredible 278 points), but the Falcons (191) edged local favorites La Ca-ada (180) for their highest finish in years.
Precocious CV freshmen Young Tae Seo and Harrison Thai, who had dominated for the Falcons all year long, paved the way for the runner-up plaque.
Seo earned first place in the boys’ 200-yard individual medley (1 minute, 50.14 seconds), beating an entire field older than him. La Ca-ada freshman Brandon Nguyen finished in fourth place at 1:54.45. Seo also earned second place in the 500 freestyle (4:27.38).
Thai earned second place in the 100 breaststroke (58.29) and third place in the 100 backstroke (51.73).
Thai and Seo were also key members in the Falcons’ 200-yard medley relay that took second place (1:35.65) with seniors Jason Kim and Chris Veselich.
Seo, Veselich and Thai teamed up again, this time with Josh Chi, in the boys’ 400 freestyle relay to earn fourth place (3:12.22).
Veselich, Chi, Andrew De Jong and Daniel Olson took fifth place in the 200 freestyle relay.
