It was standing room only at the fourth annual bingo game at Holy Redeemer Healy Hall on Friday night. Over 260 people crowded into the hall for the chance to win one of 10 $100 prizes donated by local sponsors. The buy-in was $10 for two cards, $15 for six with proceeds benefitting the local American Legion and VFW posts.
The idea for the fundraiser came from member Andy Gero, one of three event co-chairmen. His daughter runs a weekly bingo game in a small town in Central Virginia that benefits the local volunteer fire department and she gave the vets the template on how to run a bingo game.
After a dinner of pizza, cookies and beverages, festivities began with the flag salute and the singing of the national anthem. Evening highlights included representatives from the various sponsors having the chance to call the numbers of a game.
There was a run on tickets for several premium raffle prizes with the lucky winners taking home such treasures as a Vera Bradley duffel bag and tickets to an upcoming Dodgers game. Special guests included Quacky from the Glendale Kiwanis. Quacky was there to help promote the upcoming duck splash being held on Oct. 10 at Verdugo Park. Supporters of the duck splash can adopt a duck for just $5 each with the chance to win big cash prizes. For information, contact Todd Hunt at toddhunt24@gmail.com.
Post member Darren Azarian took the mic to encourage those in the audience to invite active service personnel to take part in the VFW and American Legion activities. The American Legion meets the first Wednesday of the month; the VFW meets the third Wednesday of the month. Both meetings are at 7:30 p.m. and take place at the American Legion Hall at 4011 La Crescenta Ave. in La Crescenta.
Mike Baldwin, post adjutant, estimated that over $6,000 was raised during the bingo night. He said those funds will be used for veterans’ issues including the posts’ Adopt A Soldier program that supports military people whether or not deployed.
